I need someone to go scavenge some ingredients for me. I got a good base going but I don't have everything. There's something missing. I-I can't leave 'cause I have responsibilities here. And my brothers would kill me if they knew I was wracking up caravan fees for a shopping trip. I mean... Think you could find a few things for me?

Rodolfo "Rudy" Fernandez[1] is a client of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company at Big Bend Tunnel East in Fallout 76. He is a merchant of food, water and recipes, and may appear during the event Riding Shotgun, during which he will be paired with caravan guard Aries.

Background[]

Rudy grew up in a family of Mexican descent[2] who own a cannery and bakery "a few days" worth of travel from Appalachia.[3] In his childhood, Rudy cooked with his grandmother (abuela), who had a special recipe for pozole, a traditional Mexican soup/stew. However, she died before the Great War.[4] The Fernandez cannery (which he compares to Mama Dolce's Food Processing) is currently run by Rudy's brothers,[3] including owner F. Fernandez, who has accompanied Rudy on at least one caravan.[5][Non-game 1] Rudy used to work at the plant,[6] though he mostly just hung around and told jokes, self-appointing himself as the "Director of Morale Enhancement."[3]

At some point after the Great War, the Fernandez family hired the Blue Ridge Caravan Company to protect the shipments and cargo out of the cannery.[7] Afterward, Rudy's brothers designated him as their man on the road.[3][7] This new job for Rudy has kept him at Big Bend Tunnel in Appalachia, selling canned goods, water and family recipes to prospective clients.[1][8] While working with Blue Ridge, Rudy has kept his role as resident comedian alongside running deliveries and selling special food items like pepperoni rolls, the latter of which he will talk about at length.[1][3] During caravans through Big Bend Tunnel, Rudy is often paired with Aries as his guard.[9] Rudy likes Aries, but is frequently perturbed by his macabre personality.[10]

Rudy has also kept the memory of his abuela and her cooking close to him. In addition to his current gastronomic wares, Rudy has been attempting to recreate the old recipe for his abuela's pozole.[4] Rudy also aims to sell the recipe and canned servings of the pozole, which would create revenue for both the Fernandez family cannery and Blue Ridge.[11] During the quest Costa Business: Rudy, manager Vinny Costa takes note of Rudy's hyperfocus, saying that it has led to Rudy being distracted on caravans.[12] Rudy will ask the Vault 76 dwellers to seek out the ingredients he needs for the pozole, so that it can be taste-tested and eventually added to his list of wares.[13] Rudy cannot go out himself due to his responsibilities at Big Bend Tunnel, and funding a caravan for a shopping trip would rack up fees and upset his brothers.[14]

After the ingredients are gathered and Rudy makes the stew, the Vault Dwellers can sample the pozole and offer their opinion on it.[15] He will be emotional and thankful if told that the pozole would make his abuela proud.[16] If he is told that the pozole is too burnt, he will panic and attempt to market it as "lightly barbequed."[17] Regardless, Rudy will refine the recipe and begin selling it.[18] Even if a "lightly barbequed" label does not work out,[19] Rudy also sends the recipe and pozole back home to his brothers. Rudy says that it is not quite how they remembered it, but still made them nostalgic. However, Rudy's brothers rebuffed his subsequent request to return to work at the cannery; Rudy was just happy to make them laugh.[6]

Notes[]

  • Rudy has a slight stutter, which can be seen in several lines of dialogue with him, though it is not ever acknowledged by himself or any other character.[20][21]
  • Rudy could previously be found in a tent at Big Bend Tunnel West prior to the Once in a Blue Moon update. He was moved to permanently reside at Big Bend Tunnel East with the aforementioned update.

Appearances[]

Rudy Fernandez appears in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update. His character was expanded upon in the Once in a Blue Moon update.

Behind the scenes[]

Rudy will occasionally say "Rudy has wares, if you have caps." This is a reference to a similar line spoken by the Khajiit in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, another Bethesda Softworks title ("Khajiit has wares, if you have coin."). Carl McKevitt, who contributed to much of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company's design and writing, including Rudy, confirmed that this was intentional.[Non-game 2]

For a while I was the resident comedian. Ya know, tellin' jokes to guys working the machines. I called myself 'Director of Morale Enhancement.' But, my brothers wanted me to take my act on the road. Now I get to risk my neck running deliveries, tellin' jokes, and selling pepperoni rolls to you fine people."

Rudy Fernandez: "Aw man, mi Abuela's cooking was the best. She used to let me help out back in the day! She passed before the war and we haven't made her pozole since. I still remember the taste though.... I've always been a bit of a screw up but if I can make something close to how Abuela's tasted maybe I can send some back home for my bros! Ya know? Remember the good old days. Maybe we can sell it too. Prove I'm not a screw up anymore."
