Its only use is to climb down the well in the Modoc caves.

- Can be bought off the woman "with a scowl on her face" in the building across from the bathhouse, in Klamath Downtown.
- One on the toolboard in the bathhouse in Klamath Downtown.
- One is on the table in the main room to the left in the bathhouse in Klamath Downtown.
- One can be found nearby in Farrel's garden.
- One in a footlocker on level 2 of Vault 8.
- One in a locker on level 3 of Vault 8.
- In the locker of the building in front of Gecko settlement's Manager's office.
- One in a locked locker in the mercenaries' cave.
- Three in bookcases in three of Cat's Paw's rooms.
- Traveling merchants will have some on their inventory, but if the player has good karma, they will refuse to trade with the player, and must be killed to retrieve it.
- Two in bookcases in locked rooms in the Shark Club, second level.
- One in Angela Bishop's safe on the Shark Club's third level.
- Hoss in NCR Downtown carries this.
- Three can also be found right outside the Mariposa Military Base, in the locked shack in the third box to the right.
