For the human, see Roger Warwick (human). |
Roger Warwick is an Institute synth posing as a farmer living at Warwick homestead in 2287.
Background[]
When the Sole Survivor speaks with Janey, Roger's daughter, she says that her father is a lot nicer than he used to be. This change came when the human Roger Warwick was replaced with a synth built by the Institute some time before the Sole Survivor's arrival, taking over his life. Compared to the original Roger, a drunkard who barely worked on the farm, the synth is a much kinder and more hardworking individual who expresses seeming care for his family. His family attributes the change to a period of time in their near past when super mutants destroyed their crops and left them to starve, believing that the near-death situation gave him a new perspective on life.[1][2] This idea works to Roger's advantage, as it helps him explain other quirks of his being a synth, such as the fact that he no longer requires sleep. When his family comments on this, he passes it off as trauma-induced insomnia.[3][4] Despite being a synth infiltrator, Roger has genuinely come to care for the Warwick family as though they were his own.[5]
Roger is a key component of the BioScience division's Warwick Homestead Initiative, a plan to test genetically modified seeds on the surface. The Institute intends to retrieve Roger and the crops following the end of their testing, and all evidence of their presence would be purged alongside the retrieval.[6] However, this plan is not foolproof. Roger's foreman, Bill Sutton, correctly suspects that he is a synth and is attempting to convince Cedric Hopton and the other Warwicks of the truth, going as far as instructing Cedric to hire mercenaries to kill Roger.[5][7]

Roger Warwick appears only in Fallout 4.
Bugs[]
- Building a Better Crop without acquiring Warwick Homestead: Greenskins, it will randomly appear and direct the player to talk to Preston Garvey. After doing so, the quest will remain in the player character's Pip-Boy indefinitely. [verified] If Roger Warwick is killed after obtaining Warwick homestead as a settlement through
- Building a Better Crop is completed before completing Warwick Homestead: Greenskins, one will not be able to interact with him aside from trading, resulting in the only way to finish the quest being killing him and returning to Preston Garvey. [verified] If
- targetID.moveto player and teleport Roger Warwick (ID: 00048ba9) to their position. [verified]
- If one does not have Warwick homestead as a settlement, they can use power armor to jump inside the tank with him and walk "shove" him towards the broken catwalk. He will pop up out of the water long enough to give the player character the talk option and trigger the dialogue, therefore unlocking Warwick homestead as a settlement.
Roger can become stuck in a water tank at the settlement; this will cause him to be unable to be talked to. To fix this, if one has unlocked Warwick homestead as a settlement, they must first build a staircase leading out of the tank, ring a bell, wait an hour, and he should be free. If the settlement has not been unlocked, on PC, one can use the console command - Reloading a save prior to rendering of the Warwick homestead can solve this issue.
- Leaving the area and coming back at a later time may solve this issue.
Sometimes Roger will spawn in the floor of his home. He cannot be interacted with while in this state. [verified]

- ↑ Janey Warwick: "Do you mind if I ask you something? I need an honest opinion and I figure you've got no reason to lie to me."
Sole Survivor: "Sure, ask away."
Janey Warwick: "Okay, here goes. My question is... do you think a person can change? I mean, really change, like deep down?"
Sole Survivor: "Sure I do. The ability to change and adapt is a fundamental part of being human."
Janey Warwick: "I think you must be right. My dad's a good example. He used to drink all day and he never did any work, then one day, everything changed. He stopped drinking completely and started to work really hard, sometimes long past sunset. He suddenly seemed to care a lot more about what happened to the farm and to us. Honestly, it was nice."
Sole Survivor: "What do you think caused him to change? Did something happen?"
Janey Warwick: "We ran out of food after some Super Mutants wrecked the farm. We... almost didn't make it. I think it woke him up, you know? Snapped him out of it. I guess I just wanted to know it was normal, what happened to him. Thanks for helping me sort things out."
(Janey Warwick's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "No wonder your crops are doing so well."
Roger Warwick: "Yeah, they really are. I have to admit, I feel lucky to even be having this conversation. We fell on some hard times not long ago. A pack of super mutants hit us and wrecked our entire crop. Used to be the Minutemen would have helped us out, but last I heard they were too busy fighting each other to worry about us farmers. So we were on our own, all of us starving near to death. No man should have to watch his wife and children suffer, you know what I mean?"
(Roger Warwick's dialogue) - ↑ Wally Warwick: "Dad, how come you don't sleep anymore?"
Roger Warwick: "What? Of course I sleep! What kind of silly question is that, kiddo?"
Wally Warwick: "Sometimes I hear someone doing stuff in the middle of the night and it wakes me up. When I look, it's always you."
Roger Warwick: "Okay, okay, you got me. The thing is, Wally, I've had trouble sleeping ever since the hard times when we didn't' have enough food. Sometimes I have bad dreams about those days, or I worry that maybe I'm not being a good enough father. It's grown-up stuff. One day, when you're a man with a family of your own, you'll understand."
Wally Warwick: "I just want to make sure you're okay, is all."
Roger Warwick: "Son, I promise you, I've never been better. You and your sister and your mother are all healthy and happy, and that makes me very happy, too. Now off you go."

Roger Warwick: "I just feel like... I don't know, maybe I don't need as much sleep as I used to. Ever things things were bad, I feel like I can't take a break. I don't ever want us to end up back there again."
June Warwick: "Hey... we won't. Things are better now, much better. We have more than we need. I have nightmares, too, sometimes. But if we don't get enough rest, the work will suffer."
Roger Warwick: "I give you my word, you and the kids will never go hungry again. I won't let that happen."
June Warwick: "You really have changed."

The Sole Survivor: "They aren't your wife and kids. Don't lose perspective here."
Roger Warwick: "I know that, it's just... it's a habit, I guess. I've gotten used to saying it."
