Rivet City security are members of the Rivet City Security Force at Rivet City in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Rivet City security are the police and defense force of Rivet City, and they can be found patrolling the city's halls and social spaces. They are issued black-colored first generation combat armor, a riot helmet, and a 10mm submachine gun for the job. Following the Brotherhood of Steel's reclamation of Project Purity from the Enclave, and the project's subsequent activation, Rivet City security guards help protect water caravans for the Water Distribution Network.

If there are physical conflicts between the residents of Rivet City, the officers will intervene, and fine those who are caught stealing.[1] However, their enforcement is lackluster. They seem to have a rather laid-back attitude towards their job, informing the player character that if "someone steals something from you, take it back. If someone shoots at you, shoot back," and stating that they will only intervene against crimes they personally witness. They do, however, become hostile towards and hunt down anyone seen committing acts of violence against Rivet City inhabitants (e.g. the player character). All of the Rivet City security guards carry a key to the marketplace. If killed, generic security guards will eventually respawn after 72 hours.

The Rivet City guards occupy two shifts: one daytime and one nighttime. Any guards who are off duty will sleep in the Rivet City bridge tower, only getting up to take over for their counterpart on duty at the relevant time.

Broken Steel[]

In Broken Steel, Rivet City security can be seen acting as guards for the water caravans transporting Aqua Pura from the Jefferson Memorial to the rest of the Capital Wasteland. Each water caravan is usually accompanied by 2 Rivet City security armed with 10mm SMGs. If spoken to, these guards often express concern over water caravan duty, stating that it is a suicide mission. These caravans may be attacked by super mutants, Enclave soldiers, raiders, and the various creatures of the wasteland on their travel routes. The security guards will also have a water crate key in their inventory along with the Rivet City hangar key.

These water caravans sometimes have Brotherhood of Steel initiates or knights instead of Rivet City security as guards. These heavier-armed caravans tend to perform better when ambushed by hostiles.

Another pair of security guards will be found at a small tent post outside Rivet City's bridge, acting as Rivet City's control station for the water caravans.

Quests[]

Effects of player's actions[]

  • Rivet City security guards will track if the player has committed minor (pickpocketing, theft, etc.) or major (assault, murder) crimes against Rivet City. They will initially be hostile when the player commits a crime, but if one returns 72 hours later they will no longer be hostile. However, they will warn the player not to commit further crimes, with differing dialogue depending on whether the player has committed major or minor crimes. Harkness, Commander Danvers, and Bannon also have (specific) crime-tracking dialogue for Rivet City.

Other interactions[]

Rivet City security guards can be asked various questions about the city, such as directions to the science lab, market, clinic, and common room.

Notes[]

  • Killing a guard will cost the Lone Wanderer 100 Karma.
  • When a guard dies for any reason (not only if killed by the player character), a recruitment entry listing an opening for a new security guard will appear on the terminal in the bridge tower. The entry will disappear after three days when a new guard respawns.
  • In Mothership Zeta, an abducted Rivet City security guard can be found pacing around inside one of the holding cells of Mothership Zeta. If talked to, she will only respond with floating lines about how terrified she is, even after the add-on questline has been completed.
  • Every now and then, one can see a guard at Potomac Attire, telling Bannon to inform them whenever he gets new things in.
  • Rivet City security will participate in dynamic conversations with other Rivet City NPCs as well as each other.

Appearances[]

Rivet City security appear only in Fallout 3.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Occasionally Rivet City guards can be found elsewhere in the wasteland wandering aimlessly around. The Super-Duper Mart, a common spawn point for many non-player characters, supports this spawn point for Rivet City guards for unspecified reasons.
  • PCPC When you are fully hidden, and kill a Rivet City officer when no one is around, other security officers will become hostile to you, until you return 24 hours later.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes when you save at the top of the Washington Monument, then fast travel to Rivet City, kill the guard at the entrance, reload your save and fast travel to Rivet City again, the guard will be hostile as if you attacked them. Killing the guard again and then reloading the save should take care of this problem.
