Taking out the garbage: Mutants, synths, and every other freak byproduct of those damn nukes.

Knight L. Rhys,[1] registration RS-104K,[2] is a soldier of the Commonwealth chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel, serving under Paladin Danse as part of Recon Squad Gladius in the Commonwealth in 2287. He appears in Fallout 4.

Background[]

A die-hard Brotherhood member, Rhys has followed the order's edicts all his life. His dedication to the Brotherhood extends to his personal life, as Scribe Haylen mentions she once confronted Rhys about the nature of their relationship during her sponsorship as an initiate under him. Though she believed that there might be a romantic connection between them, Rhys denied it and stated that there was no room for anything in his life but the Brotherhood.[3]

Sometime after 2284,[4] Rhys was assigned as one of a handful of knights to serve under Paladin Danse in Recon Squad Gladius on the mission to perform reconnaissance in the Commonwealth, the third of its kind after a successful first recon mission and later the disastrous outcome for Recon Squad Artemis. The extent of Rhys' involvement in the squad's ground missions is unknown, though at one point, he was charged with disorderly conduct but the charges were later dropped after he displayed "uncommon valor" in the field of duty.[1] By 2287, he is the only one of the squad's knights left alive after the rest were killed in the field. He suffered serious wounds defending the outpost at the Cambridge Police Station, having to be protected by Haylen while Danse repelled the waves of feral ghouls coming from the surrounding ruins of Cambridge shortly before the Sole Survivor emerged from Vault 111.

Effects of player's actions[]

  • Knight Rhys is first encountered during Fire Support, in the front yard of Cambridge Police Station being protected by Scribe Haylen while Paladin Danse and the Sole Survivor eliminate the waves of feral ghouls. After returning from finishing Call to Arms, he will have recovered from his wounds and will react harshly to the Sole Survivor, regardless of their actions or responses in conversation.
  • After accepting Danse's offer to join the Brotherhood of Steel, he will issue orders to eliminate hostiles in the radiant quest Cleansing the Commonwealth.
  • If the Sole Survivor sides with the Brotherhood and completes The Nuclear Option, after they are promoted to the rank of sentinel, Rhys will apologize and offer to accept whatever disciplinary action his previous attitude should deserve. In all subsequent conversations, however, Rhys will continue to be rude and standoffish.
  • If the Sole Survivor sides with the Railroad, Rhys will appear as one of the defenders outside Cambridge Police Station during Precipice of War and must be killed.

Other interactions[]

  • Before completing Blind Betrayal, Rhys will firmly state that Danse must be destroyed due to being a synth. He will not have any unique dialogue if the quest is completed by sparing Danse.

  3. The Sole Survivor: "I wish we could see eye-to-eye."
Scribe Haylen: "Rhys only sees one thing... Rhys. Rhys bleeds Brotherhood. It's all he cares about. It's his family, it's his whole life. If anything else comes into the picture and gets in the way, he shoves it aside."
The Sole Survivor: "Is there something between the two of you?"
Scribe Haylen: "When I first joined up... Rhys is the one who sponsored me. He took me under his wing, showed me the ropes. I thought there was a little more between us, so I asked him if he cared about me that way. He told me the Brotherhood of Steel was all that he cared about, and there was no room for anything else in his life. We never spoke about it again. Look, I... I need to get back to things. If you're worried about Rhys, just keep doing what you're doing. He'll come around soon enough."

  4. Paladin Danse: "It might surprise you to learn that my recon team isn't the first to visit the Commonwealth. Over the last seven years, two other teams were sent here by the Brotherhood to gather technology. The first team's mission was a huge success. They came back with crates full of pre-war artifacts and historical documents. The second wasn't so fortunate. Shortly after they arrived, we lost contact with them and they haven't been heard from since. As far as my team goes, we've lost four good men to this godforsaken wasteland. We've been a target from the moment we arrived. But despite our setbacks, I don't intend to give up and head home... or end up missing."
