Background[]
Having called Red Death Island its home, the Red Death is a fearsome sea creature, responsible for the loss of many ships in and around the Mount Desert Island. Many a hunter have tried to find and kill it themselves since the birth of the Red Death legend, yet they have all continually failed.[1]
In truth, the "Red Death" is a bloodrage mirelurk of a very small size (smaller than a bloatfly) with the unique feature of having distinctively glowing red eyes. These eyes are the source of its destructive reputation, as their shine pierces the Fog at sea and lures curious ship captains to their doom by leading them to run aground on the rocky shoals around its island.[2] These incidents are subsequently reported back as being caused by the creature itself, and, by 2287, the Mariner, closing in on death due to her terminal illness,[3] has now made plans to set out on a grand hunt for the Red Death, intending to kill it or die trying.

Quest[]
The Great Hunt: The Mariner seeks to defeat the Red Death as her one last heroic adventure, and the Red Death must be killed despite being non-hostile in order to achieve this goal. The Mariner is humiliated by what the Red Death actually is, and one has to choose whether to reveal the true nature of the Red Death to the people of Far Harbor, lie that it was actually a ferocious sea monster, or simply claim to never have encountered it in order to preserve the Mariner's reputation.

- ↑ Allen Lee: "The Red Death. And a mainlander killed it."
"People been hunting the Red Death for years. Never been found."
"The Red Death. *laugh* Look out for the big game hunter!"
(Allen Lee's dialogue) Note: These lines are alternates depending on how the player decides to resolve the issue of telling the harbormen about the Red Death at the end of the quest The Great Hunt. - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Are you sure this is it?"
The Mariner: "It's got to be... The red glowing eyes. I mean, when the Fog's thick - that little fella is deadly in his own fashion. The shoals around here are treacherous. A middling captain with a mite of curiosity would run aground for certain. And this far from shore, that'll end you."
(The Mariner's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Why does it need to be soon?"
The Mariner: "Fine. Fine. Doc Teddy... Well, I have a condition. Terminal. No cure. Hard to get that out. When... I take the Long Walk, I can't count on anyone else keeping the Hull in good repair. So it's best to get her ready before then."
(The Mariner's dialogue)
