Recruit Legionaries are members of Caesar's Legion living in the Mojave Wasteland in 2281. They form the backbone of the Legion, and are the most common type of legionary.
Background
Recruit legionaries are the backbone of the military of Caesars Legion. They are the lowest rank, and are often considered as expendable in the eyes of higher ranking officers such as the Legate and veteran decanus. These Legionaries come from the various tribes conquered or integrated by the Legion. They go through Legion training, which given the nature of the Legion is no simple task. These Legionaries are better trained than the average NCR trooper when it comes to sheer conditioning and hand to hand combat. The NCR, however, offers superior firearm training and equipment to its troops. Their level of combat experience tend to vary, but all have yet to distinguish themselves to earn the rank of prime legionary. They are seen throughout the wasteland in scouting and raiding parties. They are typically led by a decanus. All of them are absolute in their devotion to Caesar and the Legion, and will gladly give their life for their cause.
Compared to NCR troopers, Recruit legionaries have higher health, but inferior armor. Also, while NCR soldiers primarily use firearms, the recruit legionaries use weapons ranging from rifles to crude machetes.

Behind the scenes
- The recruit legionary is based on the early Roman Republic's Hastati, which were the youngest or newest members of the Legion and had yet to distinguish themselves in combat. They formed the front line of the Legion formation in battle.
