Project Vulcan was a pre-War Grafton Steel Research and Development project at Grafton Steel Underground to increase steel forge efficiency.[1]

Background[]

One of the three projects undertaken by Grafton Steel, the goal of Project Vulcan was to increase steel yield at the Grafton Steel plant.[2] Potential methods were proposed, such as reducing the size of the forges, increasing their speed and output, or improving forge modularity in order to switch tasks more efficiently. However, little progress was made before the Great War.

Appearances[]

Project Vulcan is mentioned only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In Roman mythology, Vulcan is the god of metal working and the forge.
  • The Wastelanders update introduced a cut cell into the Fallout 76 game files, the Vulcan research laboratory, and although Project Vulcan was by an American company, the cell contains Chinese flags, suggesting it was a communist installation and potentially an early version of the Deep. The Vulcan name may have been reused for the Grafton Steel initiative for the same update's lore.
  • Project Vulcan was also later used as the name of an unrelated Enclave project in the Gleaming Depths update, four years after Wastelanders's release.
