A potato is a consumable both appearing and mentioned across the wastelands.

Characteristics[]

First grown in South America, potatoes are the product of a plant also found proliferating after the Great War.[1][2]

Background[]

Potatoes are a post-War food source mentioned by Delbert Winters as growing in Appalachia. He mentions observations he has made of a hybrid variety that had pollinated with tomatoes, subsequently tasting like "ketchup-flavored cardboard."[1]

In the Commonwealth, potatoes are described as extinct by the Brotherhood of Steel, who has been engaging in research on local flora.[3] A Prydwen terminal includes information on two species of plants, a potato and a tomato, that have hybridized into a new species called a tato.[3] Despite this, Abigail Finch once threatened her husband Abraham Finch and her son Jake that if they don't stop their infighting, they would be peeling potatoes for a year, making the information that potatoes are extinct within the Commonwealth dubious or conflicted.[4]

Meanwhile, fresh potatoes are still grown in the Capital and Mojave Wastelands, and the tato hybrid is not known to have spread to these regions.
