You can mock me all you want, I don't care. Just get me out of here.

Initiate Pek is an initiate in the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Initiate Pek is young, inexperienced, and very headstrong.[Non-game 1] He recently took part in a long-range recon mission to Falls Church alongside Paladin Hoss, Knight Church, and an unnamed paladin, which was also meant to double as a training exercise for the young initiate to gain experience. Although the group believed that the district would be clear, as long-range recon is typically performed in areas that have already been secured, they were instead set upon and attacked by a group of super mutants.[1][2] Church was killed in the initial strike, and Pek's weapon jammed on the first shot, leading to him being cut off from the others and forcing him to retreat into an office building.[2][Non-game 2][3][1] Although Pek is inexperienced, Hoss believes that he has had enough training to know that the best course of action is to hold fast and wait for reinforcements. However, as Pek is only an initiate, Hoss knows that he will not be able to last long against the super mutants that followed him into the building, and is awaiting the opportunity to stage a rescue operation.[4]

By the time the Lone Wanderer arrives in Falls Church, Hoss and the other paladin are continuing to fight the super mutants outside, while Pek is still trapped in the office building. The Lone Wanderer can offer to help Hoss rescue the young initiate, whereupon they are sent alone into the building to retrieve him while the others guard the outside. Upon meeting them, Pek is glad that someone has been sent to rescue him, as he was confident that Hoss would not leave him behind.[3] If the Lone Wanderer is sufficiently experienced in either firearms or general repairs, they can unjam his weapon for him, and he is surprised by how easy it was to fix the issue.[5][6][7] Alternatively, they can give him one of their own weapons, tell him that they are unable to unjam his, or simply tell him not to worry about having a weapon.[8][9][10] He does not take kindly to jokes or mockery, as the situation has put his life at stake.[11][12] If they manage to successfully rescue and reunite him with Hoss and the other paladin, he will be extremely grateful towards the Lone Wanderer for saving their life.[13][14]

Relationships[]

Pek has a strong relationship with Paladin Hoss, as he was confident that Hoss would not leave him behind after they were separated.[3] Likewise, Hoss genuinely cares about Pek's wellbeing, and would be very distressed if something were to happen to the young initiate.[15][16] Pek is also very much in love with Sentinel Sarah Lyons, but, although she secretly finds him amusing, she is annoyed by his behavior on a professional level and requested that he be sent to operate in a different area of the city.[Non-game 1]

Paladin Hoss: "Long range recon. We typically do them in areas that have already been swept and are thought to be clear. Knight Church fell in the initial strike, the Initiate was cut off, and we were forced to retreat."
    (Paladin Hoss' dialogue)
  2. 2.0 2.1 The Lone Wanderer: "What's happening here?"
Paladin Hoss: "We were performing a training exercise with one of the Initiates when we were cut off by the Super Mutants. We saw him flee into a building up ahead during the attack, but before we could link up with him, we were pushed back. Now that we've cleared this area, we can press forward and attempt to recover the initiate. I only pray that he is unharmed."
    (Paladin Hoss' dialogue)
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 The Lone Wanderer: "Calm down. I'm here to help."
Initiate Pek: "Oh, thank God. Paladin Hoss sent you, didn't he? I knew he wouldn't leave me behind. When they attacked, we were cut off so quickly. My gun jammed and I never even got a shot off. I couldn't do anything but hide."
    (Initiate Pek's dialogue)
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Is the initiate still alive?"
Paladin Hoss: "He's had enough training that he should know that when facing overwhelming odds, a Brother's best recourse is to wait for reinforcements. I suspect that he is making a stand inside of that building, but an Initiate won't be able to stand for long against those Mutants."
    (Paladin Hoss' dialogue)

    "Initiate Pek:
Pek is young (16), gung-ho, and inexperienced. He's totally in love with Sarah Lyons (who finds him secretly amusing but is professionally annoyed with his behavior, and has requested that he patrol a different part of the Metro Area). He is always the one charging into danger first, celebrating victory prematurely, and possibly getting blown away by foes he never saw coming."

    "Paladin Hoss:
Hoss hates chaperoning wayward cadets almost as much as latrine-cleaning duties, and his fears have recently been proven right, as Initiate Pek disappeared on a long-range recon sweep of the Falls Church zone. He's happy for any help."
