Paladins are the protectors of the Brotherhood and their elite fighting force. Each is a highly trained combat veteran with high tech equipment at their disposal. They are responsible for maintaining security, from enemies both within and outside of the organization.[1] The ranks of the paladins are reinforced through promoting veteran knights of exceptional combat aptitude. It is generally impossible to become a paladin any other way.[2][Non-game 1][Non-game 2][Non-game 3]
Members of the order their whole lives they have not experienced life outside of the Brotherhood.[3] These paladins have come to idolize Head PaladinRhombus and Head ScribeVree.[4] The paladins in the bunker will direct the Vault Dweller to Senior Paladin Talus, High Elder John Maxson and Head Scribe Vree for any questions they might have.[5][6][7] They have recently come to use new laser rifles but preference for their older laser pistols is high.[8] They get bored while they are at their guard posts inside Lost Hills, they have been known to joke about playing Marco-Polo.[9] When they have time between patrols and training they like to keep up on their studies. They have to keep themselves at peak physical and mental condition, as being a paladin isn't only about combat.[10][11][12][13]
The paladins are regularly patrolling the perimeter of Lost Hills, they discourage unwanted elements from proceeding deeper into their territory. A dangerous job, particularly at night,[14] they are at an increased state of readiness due to the reports of large mutants attacking caravans and travelers.
Those that are not patrolling their territory are guarding their caravans,[15][16] making sure that their trade with the Hub, weapons for food and materiel, continues.[17][18][19] They are also perusing their wares, looking for deals.[20][21] These paladins will direct both brothers and outsiders who have questions to InitiateCabbot.[22][23]
Should the Vault Dweller have become an initiate, he can meet paladins patrolling their territory. They can inform him of this,[24] and he can answer their order to report his scouting.[25] They will become annoyed should he report that he has nothing, and order him to continue scouting.[26] Should the Vault Dweller have not become a brother of their order, but has already visited Lost Hills, they will let the Vault Dweller pass through their territory so long as he is peaceful,[27] or at least fights what the Brotherhood considers enemies.[28] Should this encounter be before the Brotherhood have been informed of the Unity threats, they can bring the Vault Dweller to their elders, specifically High ElderJohn Maxson.[29]
Should the Vault Dweller have already been to the Brotherhood and not have been initiated he can insult the paladins while refusing to state his business.[30] Should the Vault Dweller inform them of his search for the water chip they will show disgust at being enslaved to a single piece of technology. Declaring it better to be struggling on the surface.[31] Should he tell them that he is looking for the source of the mutant attacks they will direct him to the Glow, though they doubt that even mutants would survive in that amount of radiation for long.[32] If questioned about any news that they have run across, informing him of a wrecked caravan about a day's journey away, and a sole survivor, a girl telling of the mutant humans of great strength that attacked them.[33]
