Oregon was a state of the pre-War United States of America, mentioned multiple times in the Fallout series. It appears in Fallout 2.
Background[]
Already settled for thousands of years before the first European exploration, Oregon was admitted to the United States in 1859. Herbert Hoover, 31st president of the United States, was raised in Oregon after being born in Iowa.[1] Over the course of the nation's lifespan, the Pacific Northwest state continued to grow, including the establishment of Banfield College in the city of Humboldt.[2]
By the late 21st century, Oregon was host to a forward depot of the United States Army under General Victor Breckenridge. In September 2077, the strain of the then-ongoing Sino-American War resulted in the depot's supply being unable to meet demand, leading to limited shipments being deployed to frontline units, such as General Constantine Chase's Anchorage Command.[3] Smaller bunkers were also set up in the area, providing automated storage of ordnance and doubling as a dumping ground for radioactive waste.[4]
After the Great War[]
Conditions in early post-War Oregon are unclear. At least one town was settled by survivors prior to 2105; a chemist who had previously lived in the coastal town of Coos Bay, Oregon described it as a "soggy ass flooded town" and a "shitshow," which caused him to leave for the East Coast.[5] Other settlements would also appear over time, such as Klamath (known as Klamath Falls before the war).
Over two centuries of post-nuclear regrowth, the southern parts of the state became a stretch of wildland, with a particularly rich population of geckoes in the coastal regions. The species' explosive breeding lent itself to an economic growth around the trapping and skinning of geckoes for organized towns like Klamath and the scattered tribes inhabiting the area.[6] However, the widespread tribal settlement also made the territory a favorite target of the Slaver's Guild of New California, who preyed on the isolated populations for stable business.[7]
In general, relations between wildland tribes and fortified settlements were strained, with the latter considering themselves a superior ilk due to having the "sense" to establish their towns in old but long-lasting ruins, rather than out in the untamed wilderness. Many developed a deep prejudice towards "tribals," looking down on them for their "uncivilized" culture and seeing them as lazy troublemakers.[8] As a result, Klamath was one of the only major towns of its kind in the area, and a particularly bigoted one when it came to people coming from tribes in the surrounding area.[9]
Around the turn of the 23rd century, new communities continued to emerge, including the village of Arroyo, settled by the Vault Dweller following the defeat of the Unity. Tribal territory also extended to the very boundaries of land and sea, such as an unspecified coastal tribe that Sulik hailed from. While the denizens of Klamath didn't include tribes when talking about centers of civilization, the tribes in the region conversely do not count Klamath as a center of civilization either.[10] One thing they both share is that neither tribals nor settlement folk think highly of the disparate cannibal groups plaguing the wilderness.
