Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer, best known for his model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at its center.

Background[]

Nicolaus Copernicus was a mathematician and astronomer during the Renaissance. He became famous with his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, in which he brings forward his model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at its center. This would later be called the Copernican Revolution. Copernicus was notably persecuted and derided as mentally ill for his theories.[1][2]

Appearances[]

Nicolaus Copernicus is mentioned in the name of the Museum of Technology's Copernicus planetarium in Fallout 3, and is also mentioned by Katherine Swan in Fallout 76, introduced in the Night of the Moth update[3]

Katherine Swan: "Well, that's rude. I'd slap you, but you're covered in filth of the wasteland, and I don't want to get my hands dirty. But I digress. Copernicus was "crazy." Galileo, Newton, and countless others."

  2. A Vault Dweller: "You mean aliens? Do you worry people won't take you seriously?"
Katherine Swan: "Not at all. Such a distinction would put me in good company. Galileo and Copernicus were deemed mentally unfit, and persecuted by lesser astronomers."
