New York was the location of the United Nations headquarters before it was disbanded on July 26, 2052.[1]

In 2065, a nuclear reactor, struggling to power the population of seventeen million people, went supercritical for a period of about five minutes. While there was no explosion, the NYC incident coined the term "hot summer" for a heat-related electrical overload on nuclear systems. The event mandates power rationing throughout the city. [2]

- The Statue of Liberty can be seen in the holodisk video game Atomic Command, which is found in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.
- New York City is also listed as "gone" along with Washington, Boston and the rest of the East Coast on Arnold Wabash's terminal located in the Nucleus Command Center. A Boston Red Sox fan was also arrested by the Boston Police Department for standing on an overturned car and holding a defaced t-shirt with "WE BEAT NEW YORK!" written on it.
- Before the Great War, Johnny Weston pursued an acting career in New York City, though it ended in failure and he became a "bum" living on the city streets.[6]
- Elizabeth Cochran Seaman, aka "Nellie Bly" investigated the Women's Lunatic Asylum of Blackwell's Island, New York City, New York. Her experiences later being published into the book Ten Days in a Mad-House.[7]

It is also mentioned in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Dead Money, as well as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, with the Statue of Liberty making a cameo appearance in the Atomic Command game. It is also mentioned in the Fallout 76 update Wastelanders
Behind the scenes
- New York City is a real world city and the most populous in the United States.
- During the early planning of Fallout 4, New York was discussed as a possible location for the game, and a design document was produced by Emil Pagliarulo with this idea in mind. The developers instead chose Boston as the location for the game, but have kept the design document on file.[8]
