New Mexico was a state of the pre-War United States of America.

Background[]

New Mexico is a landlocked state in the American Southwest. Towards the end of World War II in 1945, the world's first nuclear bomb detonation took place in the state, a culmination of years of research and development led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. It was there that he uttered the famous phrase, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds," quoting the Bhagavad Gita.[1] Over a century later, nuclear weapons destroyed the world, though human civilization in New Mexico persisted.

By 2281, all of New Mexico had been conquered by and assimilated into Caesar's Legion.[2] This conquest, in typical Legion fashion, included the razing of settlements and enslavement of their inhabitants.[3] Trading in Legion-controlled New Mexico is said to be quite profitable, leading some to prefer it over trading with the New California Republic.[4]

Notes[]

Appearances[]

New Mexico is directly mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas. The state is also indirectly mentioned in the Fallout 76 update Wastelanders and the Fallout TV series.

Behind the scenes[]

The Reservation, previously known as the Los Alamos Nuclear Testing Facility, is a location in New Mexico that was to appear in Van Buren, the canceled Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios.[Non-game 1]

Caesar: "That's right. Decades of warfare, absorbing lesser tribes, gathering power. Forging the dross into a vast, razor-sharp scythe. My Legion's expansion has never ceased. Much of the Utah and Colorado, and all of Arizona and New Mexico, are mine. We have cities of our own, but nothing compared to Vegas. Finally, my Legion will have its Rome."

  3. The Courier: "Where are you from?"
Siri: "A small town in New Mexico. The Legion burned it a few years back - that's how I ended up here."

  4. Courier: "Do you ever trade with the NCR?"
Dale Barton: "Between having to hire protection and getting slapped with taxes, it's more profitable to stick to Arizona and New Mexico. But, I do cross the river from time to time when an opportunity comes along."
