The mysterious component, in reality an Ultracite battery cell, is a miscellaneous quest item in Fallout 76, introduced in the Steel Dawn update.

Characteristics[]

This device is a power cell made from Ultracite. Incredibly powerful, compact, and valuable, the Brotherhood First Expeditionary Force wants to reverse-engineer it and use the cell to boost a communications transmitter at the Enclave research facility to full range, so that they can re-establish contact with High Elder Roger Maxson and the rest of the Brotherhood at Lost Hills in California.[1][2]

Scribe Odessa Valdez would also like to make more battery cells once the device is reverse-engineered, so that its powerful capabilities could be applied to other things, such as Vertibirds.[3]

Similar Ultracite batteries are used by the Responders to power vertibird flights to The Pitt, provided by the pre-War owners of The Whitespring Resort. Orlando speculates that the batteries the management distributes and the one discovered in Fort Atlas were possibly the result of similar contacts from before the War.[4]

Locations[]

The mysterious component is retrieved from the top of the central machine in the ATLAS substructure during the quest Mother of Invention. It appears after the induction coil is retrieved from the same place.

Notes[]

All of the quest items retrieved during the latter half of Mother of Invention, during the "Extract components from the ATLAS machines" objective and including the mysterious component, are removed from the player character's inventory upon speaking with Scribe Valdez at the conclusion of the quest.

  1. A Vault Dweller: "You said the signal was weak? Will it still work?"
Odessa Valdez: "I'm glad you asked! It may not work, in its current state. But do you remember what we found in the Atlas substructure? An incredibly powerful, compact, Ultracite battery cell. With one of those, we could easily boost the transmitter back to its full function. Lucky for us, I've just managed to reverse engineer the cell. Let's think of this as its final test."

  2. A Vault Dweller: "What's an Ultracite battery, again?"
Leila Rahmani: "Have you forgotten your escapade into the Atlas substructure already? You and Valdez found something incredibly valuable down there. An Ultracite battery cell. Right now, it's the only resource we have that can provide enough power to the transmitter."
    (Leila Rahmani's dialogue)
  3. A Vault Dweller: "What are your plans for the Ultracite power cell we discovered?"
Odessa Valdez: "I'd like to reverse engineer it and make more, of course. With the amount of energy it can unleash, we could power all kinds of things for a very long time. Think of how far a Vertibird could fly on Ultracite power!"
    (Odessa Valdez's dialogue)
  4. A Vault Dweller: "Wait - I discovered one of these Ultracells elsewhere. I thought it was a unique experiment."
Orlando: "I could not possibly speak to your experience, dear. It sounds remarkable to make such discoveries! All I can tell you is that the Management provides them for the Refuge. Regrettably, that is as much as I know of the matter. I might wager that whomever was behind the Ultracell you discovered likely shared similar contacts with Management at some point. But who can say?"
    (Orlando's dialogue)
