Detailed walkthrough[]
Coming to Primm[]
After entering the eastern side of Primm taken over by escaped convicts, one can go into the Vikki and Vance Casino and talk to Johnson Nash, who reveals that Deputy Beagle is being held hostage in the Bison Steve Hotel and needs to be rescued from the convicts. Alternatively, one can go directly to Deputy Beagle within the hotel. In either case, the quest will start and for the duration of rescuing Beagle, runs parallel with the main quest They Went That-a-Way as Nash says Beagle is the only one that might know something about the man in a checkered suit.
Saving Deputy Beagle[]
Inside the Bison Steve Hotel, Deputy Beagle is tied up in the kitchen, on the opposite side of the ground floor from the front entrance. Seven convicts including the leader inhabit the main floor of the hotel. One or two of them will often be found near the entrance, with the others staying nearer to the large dining hall at the back. With 25 Lockpick or the maintenance key from the storage room in the entrance area, one can reach Beagle in the kitchen without having to travel past the large group of convicts in the dining hall.
Upon interacting with Beagle, they are three options for dealing with him:
- Passing a 40 Speech skill check to persuade Beagle to immediately reveal everything he knows about the Courier's attackers, and where they went, advancing They Went That-A-Way and leaving this quest incomplete. If one is unable to pass the Speech check, he will provide this information without a skill check once he leaves the hotel.
- Killing Beagle, which incurs Karma loss and allows one to obtain his journal to advance They Went That-A-Way. Afterward, continuing with this quest will require speaking with Johnson Nash in the Vikki and Vance Casino.
- Release Beagle from his captivity, earning XP.
If the latter option is taken and Beagle is freed, additional options become available:
- Passing a 25 Speech skill check to convince Beagle to stick around as a temporary companion to help clear out the rest of the convicts in the hotel's upper floors. Note that Beagle will stop being a companion when one exits the hotel, even if the player character has told him to "wait here", so if they wish to access his inventory either to obtain the journal without Karma loss or to use him to carry loot, one will want to talk to him before leaving the hotel via the "Beagle, take a weapon" dialogue option.
- Allow Beagle to sneak out of the hotel room without helping the player character. If he is killed in the process, again speaking with Nash will advance this quest.
Finding a new Sheriff[]
After exiting the hotel, one can talk to Deputy Beagle or, if Beagle died, to Johnson Nash, in order to advance the quest. Either will ask the player character to find a new town sheriff for Primm to protect the citizens. They both will make the same two suggestions, but there is actually a total of three to choose from.
The NCR[]
The first option given is to arrange for the NCR to take control of Primm and elect a sheriff of their own. To begin, one must speak with Lieutenant Hayes in the left-hand NCR tent on the western side of the bridge through the town. Hayes will respond that the 5th Army Battalion's 1st Company currently lacks the manpower to hold Primm and will refer the player character to Major Knight at the Mojave Outpost to get reinforcements.
Situated to the southwest of Primm, along the road and up a hill, the location is easily identifiable via the pair of statues making up the Unification Monument. Knight is located behind the counter just inside the doors of the headquarters in the southeast corner of the area.
Passing a 20 Barter skill check allows for convincing Major Knight to assign an additional squad to Primm and ensure the trade route will function normally. If he cannot be convinced via the skill check, one must do a job for Ranger Jackson in order to convince Knight to send some reinforcements to the town.
Upon returning to Hayes in his tent, he will confirm that the squad is ready, and the NCR can assume jurisdiction over Primm, with Sergeant McGee as the new sheriff. The player character will have one last chance to decide whether to accept the NCR or refuse and choose another.
If chosen, the town will finally be safe and begin receiving more supplies from the NCR. Primm's residents will become NCR citizens and begin paying taxes and living under martial law. Nash will include more firearms, ammunition, and aid items in his vendor inventory, however they will be priced at a 25% markup due to the NCR taxes.
Note, Killing Major Knight at any point before he sends reinforcements to Primm will result in mission failure.
The Convict[]
The second option given is to find a man named Meyers, who has a wealth of experience that would serve Primm well as sheriff, except that he was previously imprisoned at the NCR Correctional Facility and remained there even after the breakout. At present, he is located in the Facility's visitors center.
Situated to the north-northeast of Primm, on the east side of a mountain adjacent to the I-15. The facility is controlled by the Powder Gangers, with Dawes as their gatekeeper outside the exterior door to the visitors center. Two options are available to gain entrance:
- Paying Dawes off with 100 caps.
- If one has a Hated or lower reputation with the Powder Gangers, they will be forced to kill every Powder Ganger. Meyers himself will remain neutral and will flee from the fight inside the visitors center. Wearing a Powder Gangers faction outfit will not work as Dawes will be able to see through it and will still become hostile if approached.
- Another way to gain entrance is to sneak right beside the door, nearly behind Dawes, pickpocket the key off of him and enter when the status says hidden. The player character will not incur Karma loss nor have to pay any caps.
- One can also get inside the facility by using the prison outhouses. Walk along the fence right of the entrance until one is across from them outside the fence, then activate them and 'teleport' inside.
- If Run Goodsprings Run was completed by helping Joe Cobb and his gang of Powder Gangers take over Goodsprings, Dawes will allow entry.
After getting into the visitors center, talk to Meyers sitting at a table, and about Primm's need for a new sheriff. He will tell the player character that he will only accept the position if he gets a pardon from the NCR. After making his request, he will leave the Facility and can be found waiting near the town's entrance.
The NCR pardon can be granted by Major Knight at the Mojave Outpost via one of three options:
- Convincing him by passing a 30 Speech skill check.
- Bribing him for 200 caps.
- Having a Liked or higher reputation with the NCR.
Upon receiving the pardon, one must return to Meyers and tell him he is free to assume the role of Sheriff.
With a new sheriff keeping the town safe, Johnson Nash will resume business in his store. Without the burden of NCR taxation, Nash will sell at 75% lower prices and buy for more caps.
Note, killing Major Knight at any point before telling Meyers he is pardoned results in mission failure.
The Robot[]
After entering the Vikki and Vance Casino for the first time, during the quest, one can ask Johnson Nash or Deputy Beagle about electing Primm Slim as the sheriff. Both will remark that Slim could become sheriff if the player character can find a way to reprogram him.
Primm Slim is normally found marching around the casino floor of the Vikki and Vance. Two options are available to successfully reprogram him:
- Passing a 30 Science skill check.
- Using three fission batteries and four conductors.
Speaking with Beagle (if he is alive) or Nash after reprogramming Primm Slim will complete the quest.
Results[]
Upon appointing any of the three possible sheriffs, if any were left alive, the remaining convicts within the Bison Steve Hotel will be killed instantly and one can safely return to the hotel and loot their bodies. The other remaining convicts outside (such as the roller coaster) will still be alive. Mr. New Vegas will also talk about the new sheriff in his news segment on Radio New Vegas. The choice of sheriff will also influence the ending for Primm.

Saving Beagle[]
Beagle dies[]
Notes[]
- Upon completing this quest, after a couple of in-game weeks, a group of NCR deserters will appear in the Vikki and Vance Casino. Once they are dealt with, peacefully or not, after a further in-game 2 or 3 days, the casino will reopen and one can participate in gambling there.
- If one has not disarmed or removed the mines on the overpass bridge after placing the NCR in power of the town, Sergeant McGee, the town's new sheriff, will walk over them and potentially be injured or killed.
- Failing this quest will result in some NPCs stating that Primm is now part of the NCR.
- If the player character talks to Manny Vargas in Novac to advance They Went That-A-Way using the Confirmed Bachelor perk before passing the Speech check to learn information from Deputy Beagle, the latter option will no longer be possible.
Behind the scenes[]
- The quest name is a reference to the popular song "My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)" composed by Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. It was originally part of the musical score for Robin and the 7 Hoods, a 1964 musical film starring several members of the Rat Pack. Frank Sinatra regularly performed the song live, and included the song on four of his records.
The following is based on Fallout: New Vegas cut content. |
- A cut line of dialogue exists within the game's files, assigned to Meyers where he would be speaking to a small group of inmates that followed him from the NCRCF, should he be chosen to be Primm's new Sheriff. Meyers would call upon the other inmates to join him in forming a new police force in Primm, calling them "honorable and looking for redemption" despite not having "experience with law enforcement... at least not on the enforcement side."
- It was originally possible to assign Powder Ganger deputies to guard the town if the NCR was chosen to take over.

Bugs[]
- Ruby Nash, turn hostile and will attack the player character. They may be killed without incurring a Karma penalty.[verified] After completing the quest, some of the Primm townspeople, possibly including
- The quest may remain active if one kills Major Knight, and convincing Hayes or Meyers to protect the town will be impossible as the quest marker will simply point to an empty space at the Mojave Outpost; the only option left is Primm Slim.
- Meyers as town sheriff, people across the Mojave (including citizens of Primm) will mention a disgust in Primm's militarization by the NCR, stating it "wimped out and accepted NCR rule, some people will do anything to feel safe."[verified]
- A similar problem can occur if one puts the town under NCR rule, but they will comment about the new sheriff instead of the NCR.
Even though one reinstates - Meyers may become hostile if one enters the prison violently, regardless of whether or not he gets attacked.[verified]
- Powder Gangers may not attack the player character around NCRCF even if one is not wearing a gang uniform and are hostile towards them.[verified]
- I Fought the Law" has been completed by helping the NCR take over the facility, Meyers will be locked in a permanent "Goodbye" conversation loop, talking as if the NCR is still invading, even if they killed everyone and the quest is completed. One will be unable to advance the quest.[verified] If the quest "
- Major Knight will not have any option for filling out a form of "Pardon" for Meyers. One may only be able to discuss NCR control with Knight. A possible solution is to avoid all NCR discussion.[verified]
- Vance's 9mm submachine gun. If one intends to reprogram him to become the sheriff, it may be best to do so before acquiring the gun.[verified] Primm Slim may not talk to the player character if they acquire
- Following the quest and waiting three days, when gambling at the Vikki and Vance Casino and exchanging chips for caps, one will receive the caps and still have the same amount of chips. This can be repeated if desired.[verified]
- After completing the quest, only Beagle will leave the casino, so nobody will patrol the area outside. This is a scripting error in the game itself and cannot be fixed. One will not be able to purchase anything from Johnson Nash anymore. If the player character chose Primm Slim as the new sheriff, he and Beagle will leave the casino and Johnson Nash will still be able to trade. If the player character chose the NCR or Meyers then they will receive the possibility to ask Johnson Nash how Primm is doing after the quest, trading is then impossible. After a few days the casino will have reopened even if all the Primm inhabitants are still inside. The bug appears to have been introduced in patch 1.06 and there is no known fix.[verified]
- Beagle when he is still a captive in the Bison Steve Hotel about the man in a checkered suit and gain you 40 experience each time.[verified] Occasionally one can loop asking
