The mutated toe is a miscellaneous item in Fallout 2.
Acquisition[]
In order to acquire the mutated toe, the Chosen One must spend a certain amount of time in toxic waste without protection, causing the mutation to occur.
Detailed walkthrough[]
The only toxic waste that has this effect is in the toxic caves northwest from Klamath where Smiley is trapped. Per the script KTGOO.SSL, the player character has to step in the toxic waste 15 times with no protection (at 2 damage per step, rubber boots and standard power armor prevent the counter from incrementing, though other types of power armor don't seem to be accounted for), at which point a message will display in the message window:
- "Your feet burn and itch for a little while, but then they feel better." – KTGOO.MSG
After this, the game will set a timer on the player for one month. At the end of this month, another message will appear:
- "That nasty bunion on each foot seems to have turned into an extra toe. But at least that persistent, burning itch has gone away." – OBJ DUDE.MSG
After this, the player character will have at least one extra toe when examined by doctors or an Auto-Doc. The toe can then be amputated and acquired as an item in a medical center equipped with an Auto-Doc.
Notes[]
- Having a mutated, unremoved toe will result in failure of the Vault City citizenship test.
- Some non-player characters claim the toe is a one-hit K.O. device for destroying Frank Horrigan, but that is only a joke, although it does lower his max HP by 3 points.
- In a rather humorous note, the game responds with "You just ate your fucking toe!" if it is consumed.
- The lump of brain in the Fallout 3 add-on Point Lookout makes a direct reference with "you feel a terrible sense of loss." The cure research note in The Pitt add-on also makes reference to the item.
Behind the scenes[]
According to its effects, the mutated toe seems set up to temporarily give the Awareness perk.
