Moe the Mole was a fictional character used to teach children about outdoor safety in Appalachia.[1]

Background[]

Moe the Mole was part of an educational program designed by the United States Forest Service to teach young campers about local wildlife and environmental science.[2] One such tour covered the southern devil scorpion,[3] during which Moe dispenses questionable advice which included: picking it up and showing it some love;[4] carrying a firearm or two to defend oneself;[5] and not remaining calm.[6] This Appalachian wildlife tour was complete with a tall tale regarding a foot-long scorpion named Scorpie who had a taste for cupcakes.[7][8]

And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote."

  10. Ranger Roy Barnes: "It's those damn mole rat's fault. Hate the things. Buggers never stop coming. Park's never safe. Fight the varmints off every day. Bombs drop and now I'm a glorified groundskeeper, you know? Make some improvised explosives, right? Kill them all, I'm thinking. No good. Trap's too touchy. One killed a visitor today. First visitor in months. Park safety's my responsibility. Total failure. Have to disarm the mines. The Moe suit...maybe it could shield me from a blast? Maybe not. I'll do what I have to. Park must be safe again."
