Looking a mite too sober by my estimation. I can fix that.— Mitch

Mitch is the proprietor of the Last Plank in Far Harbor in 2287 in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor.[1]

Background[]

Mitch is the proprietor of the Last Plank,[1] the only bar, restaurant and hotel in Far Harbor. He runs the bar and rents the rooms, while his waitress Debby handles the tables. They both spar constantly regarding her cat Tink and its position in the tavern. Their relationship isn't really contentious, as he secretly likes the cat[2][3] and the banter with his employee.

Mitch and his family have been living on Mount Desert Island for at least the last seven generations.[4] The family homestead is the National Park visitor's center, but by 2287 its sole occupant is Mitch's uncle Ken. In fact, Ken is the last native holdout on the island, thanks to Mitch sending him Acadian Fog condensers that he acquired from Captain Avery.[5][6][7] Mitch's pride won't allow him to admit that he is worried for his aging uncle. He wants someone to convince Ken to leave the homestead and live with him in Far Harbor. At the very least, he wants someone to go and check up on him.[6][7][8][9] Mitch is willing to offer supplies to anyone who helps him -- as much as the limited funds of his business will allow.[10]

Personality[]

Mitch has an outwardly abrasive and irritable attitude, a personality trait he shares with his uncle Ken. Seemingly perpetually flippant but talkative,[11] he is actually more caring than his surface personality suggests. Mitch is embarrassed to show his true feelings; instead, he chooses to cover for it with bluster, snippiness, and exaggerated complaints. While some of this is genuinely due to embarrassment at needing help from others,[3][10][12] other times this is more or less just banter, such as his arguments with Debby about her cat Tink.[2] Like the rest of the harbormen, generations of fierce independence and functional anarchy have bred a specific kind of egoism and stubbornness in Mitch. Specifically, Mitch has developed a bit of "berserker glee" and is extremely prideful.[13] This pride prevents him from asking for help directly for his uncle Ken.[6][7] However, this pride has also instilled in Mitch a strong sense of justice against perceived enemies of Far Harbor,[14] and if riled, he is willing to risk his life in defense of the community.[15] This, however, does not mean that Mitch is comfortable with killing.[16]

Mitch has a grim and ironic sense of humor (gallows humor),[17] which reflects the current state of the harbormen as a community just barely clinging to life on the island. However, he seems to use this more to liven up the community (and his business) than to fearmonger: after all, if the townspeople are doomed, they may as well drink and live vicariously while they can.[11][18][19][20] Even in tense situations, Mitch can still find a way to crack a joke or seem less serious.[21] However, Mitch is, in fact, extremely worried and losing hope. He genuinely believes that the island is cursed and the Fog is alive, and out to get them.[22] As a contingency, he has penned, although not published, a farewell letter in case of his death that encourages anyone left alive to get off of the island for their own good.[23]

Quests[]

  • The Hold Out: Mitch is concerned for the well being of his uncle Ken, who lives alone at his homestead surrounded by the Fog. He wants his uncle to leave his home and come live with him in Far Harbor. He can be convinced (with a Charisma check of Red) to give the player three stimpaks and three RadAway as supplies for the trip.[10]
    • Should the Sole Survivor help Uncle Ken stay at his homestead, reporting that he is fine, Mitch will no longer be as worried.
    • Should the Sole Survivor help by convincing Uncle Ken to effectively abandon his homestead, Uncle Ken will move to Far Harbor permanently, wandering the Last Plank complaining that he was run off his land[24][25] and is now a "capless beggar" on the pier.[26]
    • Either way, Mitch will send settlers to the National Park visitor's center, either so that Uncle Ken has some help[27][28][29][30] or so that some of the harbormen can find a new home.
  • The Way Life Should Be: Mitch is part of the crowd observing if either DiMA is put on trial for replacing harbormen with synths, or Avery is exposed as a synth. In these situations, Allen will try to convince the harbormen to either destroy Acadia in the former case or let him execute Avery in the latter case. The player character can try to talk him down or let the other harbormen decide whether to spare or kill. Depending on side quest progress, Mitch may side with either the player character or Allen, influencing the public opinion counter that decides the outcome (see the quest page for more detail about this).
    • If The Hold Out was completed, regardless of whether Uncle Ken stayed or came to Far Harbor, Mitch will speak positively of the player character, raising the public opinion counter by 1 point.[31]
    • If The Hold Out was not completed, but The Great Hunt was completed by lying about the fight with the Red Death, Mitch will still support the player character, raising the public opinion counter by 1 point.[32]
    • If neither of these side quests was completed, Mitch will side with Allen Lee, although this does not affect the public opinion counter.[33]
    • If the harbormen decide to destroy Acadia (either if Allen Lee is not talked down when DiMA is put on trial, or as the unavoidable result if Avery is exposed to Allen), Mitch will go to Acadia and participate in the battle.

Effects of player's actions[]

  • After Rite of Passage is completed, Mitch will treat the player as a hero for having completed the Captain's Dance.[34] He will admit that he had the player character figured wrong and will offer them a free drink.[35] If accepted, he will be impressed and give the player some whiskey.[36] If rejected, Mitch will be amused.[19] Either way, Mitch will also have ambient dialogue showing he is impressed by the Sole Survivor.[37]
  • Apart from his involvement in the outcome of the quest The Way Life Should Be, Mitch will also have additional comments based on events that may occur in the quest.
    • If DiMA is convinced to stand trial for murdering the human Avery, Mitch will banter about having a 513-cap pool betting on who DiMA had replaced by a synth.[21]
    • If DiMA is executed during the trial, but Allen Lee is talked down from destroying Acadia, Mitch will express fear that Acadia will keep replacing them with synths.[38]
    • If the human Avery's death is exposed to Allen Lee, but he is talked down from executing the synth Avery, Mitch will express paranoia about how long Avery had been replaced by a synth for.[39]
    • If the human Avery's death is exposed to Allen Lee, and he is not talked down from executing the synth Avery, Mitch will express approval after Allen kills the synth Avery, saying that it was hard, but still an act of justice.[14]
    • If Acadia is destroyed by the harbormen, Mitch will have an additional comment showing that he is shaken by taking part in the slaughter.[16]
  • If Cleansing the Land is completed by destroying the Nucleus, Mitch will have an additional comment gloating about this and saying that "the island plays no favorites."[40]
  • If Cleansing the Land is completed by turning off the wind farm powering Far Harbor's Fog condensers, Mitch will die alongside the rest of the harbormen as a result of the island's creatures overrunning Far Harbor.
  • If Reformation is completed, with High Confessor Tektus replaced by a synth duplicate calling for peace, Mitch will have an additional comment expressing distrust, suspicious that Tektus can easily change his mind.[41]
  • Mitch will have some additional post-quest comments if The Hold Out is completed. If Ken was convinced to stay at Far Harbor, Mitch will be pleased that his family is "whole again." If Ken stays at the National Park visitor's center, the people Mitch sends to help will ease his concerns about Ken's safety.[42]
  • Mitch will also have additional reactions if The Great Hunt is completed. If the player lied, bolstering the Red Death as a terrifying monster, he will lament not having seen the fight. Instead, if the truth about the Red Death was exposed, he will mock the Sole Survivor, insinuating mole rats are fearsome big game to them.[43]
  • If either Search and Destroy or Forbidden Knowledge are completed, destroying Acadia by exposing its existence to the Institute or the Brotherhood of Steel respectively, Mitch will have additional dialogue commenting that "a storm came in and wiped Acadia clean off the island."[44]

Other interactions[]

  • Mitch is the central character in the scripted intro scene at the Last Plank. When the player first enters, Mitch will get everyone's attention and announce the next round of drinks are on the house. When spoken to, he will give an ice cold beer to the player. This will be followed by a medium difficulty Charisma check; if passed, Mitch will give the player a bottle of "top shelf" vodka.[45][46]
    • There is an alternate version of this scene which is used if Rite of Passage was completed before entering the location for the first time.[35]

Notes[]

  • Both Mitch and his uncle Ken like vodka.[17][45][47] In fact, Mitch has invented his own medicinal concoction of vodka and native island plants, "Fire Belly."[17]
  • Despite being a merchant, Mitch doesn't like bartering (more specifically, haggling and bargaining).[10]
  • Mitch does not like Captain Avery, as he believes she has a holier-than-thou attitude and is a busybody. He believes Avery is trying to help Far Harbor, but does not believe the harbormen should change their traditional ways for the "mainland nonsense" she recommends.[35][48]
  • Uncle Ken calls Mitch a "smart one" in their the family.[5]

The Sole Survivor: "The Fog can drive you crazy?"
Mitch: "Yes. It's not natural. The Trappers you find inland, some were always murderous louts. But many just got lost in the Fog. For too long. And your mind goes. If you have any sense return where you came from. And don't look back."

    Debby: "Well, Captain Avery didn't."
Mitch: "Right, holier than thou Avery got the right of it. And thanks for reminding me. *sigh* Here's a round on the house."
    (Mitch's and Debby's dialogue)
  36. The Sole Survivor: "That's awfully friendly of you."
Mitch: "We have mainlanders coming in and out all the time. Worst of the lot are thieves or murderers. And the others we find floating face down in the harbor. But not you!"

  47. There are bottles of vodka and a bottle of Bobrov's Best moonshine at Uncle Ken's mattress in his home, the National Park visitor's center.
  48. The Sole Survivor: "What's your beef with Avery?"
Mitch: "Avery was born on the island, but she left for a good long spell. Didn't come back until, well, ten? Eleven years ago? And since then she's been trying to make us adopt all sorts of mainland nonsense. I ain't arguing she doesn't do good or her heart being in the right place, but why change what ain't broke."
(The Sole Survivor's and Mitch's dialogue)
