Metal armor is the term used for a variety of armor sets that have commonly consisted of metallic components, either forged or cobbled together from scrap, in the Fallout series.
Characteristics[]
Befitting the name, what is considered "metal" armor often presents as any sort of protective gear that is primarily metallic-based (as opposed to leather armor or wood armor). This can take the form of professionally forged metals or slapdash scrap material that has been cobbled and/or welded together as makeshift but functional armor.
While primarily metal-based, suits of power armor are much more advanced with internal mechanical systems and functions, placing them in a completely separate category from simpler metal armor.
Variants[]
Note: Many of the names given below are completely conjectural and intended to distinguish between media appearances due to the simpler name "metal armor" being used across multiple media.
Coarse metal armor[]

A basic suit of metal armor made of crudely polished metal plates.
Coarse metal armor Mk II[]

An improvement over the previous coarse black set, consisting of properply polished metal plates finely crafted into a suit of armor.
Black metal armor[]

A makeshift set of metal armor created from a variety of scrap pieces placed over an undersuit of black leather armor. The associated helmet appears as a closed-faced, armor-plated motorcycle helmet.
Gamma shield armor[]

Heavy armor outfitted to shield against Gamma Radiation through the use of lead lining. Its appearance is unchanged from the black metal armor.
Lightweight black metal armor[]

A variant of black metal armor scaled down for long traveling periods. The lightweight metal armor has the advantage of improved weight and higher resistance while providing the same level of protection.
Black metal armor, reinforced[]

An improved variant of the black metal armor, adding extra layers of metal and spiked accents in several places. The associated helmet retains the regular variant's style while adding an extra metal plate the front and two metal horns on the sides of the head.
Plate-weld metal armor[]

An armor set composed of rusted metal plating discolored from wear and time, welded together as makeshift ballistic protection. Comes in light, sturdy, and heavy variants, each with increasing amounts of welded-on parts. Modifications include fresh paint, enamelware, muted coloring for low-light traversal, refinement with alloy material, and a complete surface polish.

Spiked mutant armor[]

A heavier variant worn by super mutants, using lightweight plastic straps and metal encased in leather panels.
Gecko-backed metal armor[]

A further improved variant of the black metal armor, incorporating the tanned, toughened hides of various species of gecko to augment its resistances. Its appearance is unchanged from the regular black metal armor set.
