Maxwell "Max" Stone, also known as the Vault Dweller, is an inhabitant of Vault 13 in 2161 and the player character in the 1997 Fallout Demo.

Background[]

Maxwell Stone is a vault dweller from Vault 13, one of the western Vaults. He was sent out by the Vault overseer to retrieve a replacement for their broken water purification chip, which served as the lifeblood of the vault residents.

In his travels, Max gained a reputation for his search of Necropolis, the legendary lost city of the dead, as he hoped to find the water chip in the ruined city. He eventually ended up in Scrapheap, a small settlement that relied on a power generator running on brahmin waste to supply them with electricity and warmth. The town was doing relatively well besides the presence of two gangs: the Crypts and the Fools.

Both gangs contested the area and clashed for control of the generator, although the Crypts were currently in charge of the settlement and based their operations out of their clubhouse in front of Scrapheap's entrance. The Fools occupied a large garage in the north of town, the only intact building from before the end of civilization.

Lex, the speaker for the people of Scrapheap, greeted Max as he blew in from the desert wasteland. He begged for Max's help in overthrowing both the Crypts and the Fools and relinquishing control of the generator to the inhabitants of Scrapheap, so that the town may govern itself without living in the shadow of the feuding gangs. He offered Max directions to Necropolis in exchange for his aid.

Notes[]

Max is the player character of the Fallout Demo. His counterpart appears as one of three optional preset characters in the final build of Fallout. His biography is the same as in the retail version, but his Strength and Endurance are both lowered by one, which results in some derived stats also being lowered. In addition, his Bruiser trait is replaced with Jinxed in the demo.
