The Mass Bay Medical Center is a location in the Theater District of Boston in 2287.

Background

According to a holotape made by one of the nurses of the hospital, the Mass Bay Medical Center survived the initial nuclear attack that devastated the Greater Boston area. According to the same holotape, the hospital was then commandeered by the military, and continued to treat patients for some time. However, the situation quickly deteriorated, and the medical staff could do nothing but try to make the patients comfortable.[1] At some point after the bombs dropped, a military Vertibird crashed into the roof of the hospital. Centuries later, the skeletons of US military soldiers and former patients remain scattered throughout the building, and the Gunners have now comandeered the center for themselves.

Layout

The layout for Mass Bay is mostly vertical, except for the first floor which is broken into two sections, and the second floor which spans multiple hospital departments. The first four floors are in a different interior cell than the other floors, so if all enemies have been cleared on these lower four floors, the Sole Survivor can freely move around without alerting enemies on the remaining upper floors.

First floor

The main entrance on the west side of the building opens into a two-story lobby. The Sole Survivor will be facing east upon entering. To the south is a police Protectron; the Expert-locked terminal that controls it sits behind the nearby desk. To the north is a set of stairs leading to the second floor, with access to higher floors blocked. East of the lobby are two broken elevators to the north and restrooms to the south. Farther east is a kitchen and a fortified cafeteria with a cooking station, and a Gunner who may be doing push-ups if one sneaks up on them. To the south of this area is another entrance into the hospital.

The emergency entrance across the narrow street to the south leads to the other part of the first floor, consisting of the emergency room entrance lobby. To the north is another broken elevator that houses a turret, and just past the elevator is a staircase leading to the second floor.

Second floor

Starting from the main entrance staircase, nearby is an Assaultron and/or a leveled Gunner who patrols the area. From the staircase, there are paths to the east and south. To the east is a short corridor past the two broken elevators leading to an exit to a pedestrian walkway, which in turn crosses to a destroyed parking garage on the north side of the hospital.

To the south is another corridor ending at double doors into the emergency rooms to the south, with the staircase down to the first-floor emergency entrance to the west before the emergency rooms. To the east is another small lobby with two cages (one Novice-locked), a counter with a Novice-locked safe and a Novice-locked terminal controlling the safe, and an adjoining suite of curtained exam rooms, one of which has a chemistry station. Access to the third floor is available via a collapsed floor "ramp" in this suite of rooms.

Through the southern doors into the emergency rooms, to the east past a counter is a Novice-locked room with an Addictol. To the southwest are two open rooms followed by a medic Protectron controlled by a Novice-locked terminal next to it. Finally, an Expert-locked room contains a gruesome scene including a flamer and flamer fuel.

Third floor

Ascending the collapsed floor ramp leads to several rooms, including two lab-type rooms and a small office. Beyond this is a waiting area with two broken elevators and a small skeleton with an oversized skull in a baby carriage. The staircase that was blocked from the second floor is now clear, and can be accessed through the northwest door next to the elevators to reach the fourth floor.

Fourth floor

The accessible area of the floor is another reception area. Doors to the east lead outside, with a working elevator to the south of these doors. Outside is a two-level Slocum's Joe coffee shop and Medical Center North monorail station; the destroyed monorail may be used to access the roof of Hester's Consumer Robotics to the south. The interior elevator leads up to the hospital's seventh floor.

Seventh floor

The floor opens into a three-story atrium to the east of the elevator. A Gunner commander on the eighth floor directly east will try to enter a suit of power armor just to their north if the player character is detected. There is also likely another Gunner on the ninth floor. An armor workbench is against the eastern wall on the seventh floor. Various collapsed floors create ramps leading up to the eighth and ninth floors.

Eighth floor

As noted above, a set of leveled[verification overdue] power armor will be present on this floor. Two power armor stations are also found here.

Ninth floor

To the west on this floor are two cells; one (Novice-locked) contains a dead Brotherhood of Steel scribe. To the east is a waiting room with a collapsed floor leading up to the tenth floor, and a hallway leading farther back. The hallway leads to an office facing the waiting room with a Novice-locked safe, and an MRI machine and adjacent control room.

Tenth floor

An elevator on this floor leads to the roof.

Roof

On the roof is a small living area with various junk items and drugs, while a U-turn from the elevator leads to a MILA drop point. A window cleaning elevator to the east leads to the Ticker Tape Lounge on a separate lower roof. One can also see the Vertibird that crashed into the building, which has created a path to the roof of the hospital's other wing to the west.

Notable loot

  • Syringer - On the second floor, on a countertop in the northeast corner.
  • Vault-Tec lunchbox - On the third floor, in the waiting area on a couch next to a baby carriage.
  • Power armor - On the eighth floor. The two Gunners nearby might try to enter it when alerted to the player character's presence.
  • Bonnie's holotape - On the ninth floor, in the control room for the MRI scanner in the northeast corner.

Notes

  • The chest x-rays are all hung backward, with the heart on the left side. They are normally hung as if facing the patient, with the heart on the right. An x-ray can be taken from the front or back, with an "L" or "R" placed in the corner to show orientation. The artist seems to have hung this x-ray so the "L" reads forwards, rather than putting the "L" on the right.
  • The power armor suit on the eighth floor will never improve past T-45f, regardless of player character level. It may also spawn with its helmet on rare occasions, as well as with random paint jobs applied to some pieces.
  • On the roof, there is a window cleaning elevator that can allow access to the Ticker Tape Lounge on a separate lower roof. However, upon entering the Ticker Tape Lounge and returning, the elevator will have returned to the top, with no way of calling it back down. Simply fast travel out of the location if the elevator "disappears."

Appearances

The Mass Bay Medical Center appears only in Fallout 4.

Behind the scenes

The Mass Bay Medical Center sign was created by world art intern Madeleine Rabil.[Non-canon 1]

Bugs

PCPC As with many elevators in the game, sometimes, when one enters the elevator to the roof and presses the elevator button, the elevator will close but then run forever. [verified]

  • This may be related to the positioning of the player character and/or their companion when starting the elevator. Having your companion get in first and move to the back of the elevator, then issuing the stay command, may prevent the bug from occurring. Jumping around inside the elevator may also cause it to become "unstuck."
