Maine was a state of the pre-War United States of America, mentioned in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor.
Background[]
Inhabited for thousands of years before the arrival of European colonists, Maine was originally colonized in the name of both French and British interests, becoming a hotly contested territory during the American Revolutionary War before eventually being integrated into the United States in the early 19th century as part of the Missouri Compromise.
As the United States industrialized, the inhabitants of Maine prided themselves on their closeness to their rustic roots, which led to the creation of a tourist economy centered around replicating the ideal of a hard-working, one-with-nature lifestyle.[1] By the late 21st century, the state hosted a local soft drink company, Vim! Pop Incorporated, with a history going back decades that enjoyed a market niche catering to Mainers; one of their most popular products in the latter 21st century, Vim Captain's Blend, was well-received in its attempt to capture the "taste of Maine,"[2] despite initial reservations from the beverageers.[3]
Post-War[]
Following the Great War, the shores of Maine were hard-hit by the fallout from the nuclear detonations that destroyed America. One notable phenomenon was what came to be called the Fog by the inhabitants of Mount Desert Island. Said to have been around on the island "forever,"[4] it manifests as a radioactive mass of cloud material that plagues Mount Desert Island and its surroundings, though whether it also affects the mainland is unclear. What is known is that its severity ebbs and flows over time,[5] sometimes pulling back from large parts of the island and other times encroaching right up to the very boundary between land and sea. The end result is that areas subject to the Fog's harmful effects and unpredictable presence have been rendered almost completely uninhabitable by humans. Those who do choose to live there, such as the harbormen of Far Harbor, have developed a superstitious belief in the Fog as a force of nature to be respected and feared.[6][7]

Olympia Avery: "The Fog's been here forever. There are good years when it recedes and the island's almost normal. Then there are times where it spreads all over. And people have to cling to any patch of land free of the Fog. For the past... oh, eight years or so, it's been getting... as bad as it's ever been. Now, Far Harbor's one of the only places left that's safe."
