Oh cool. *cough* We're on a first name basis. Most killers don't learn their victims name, so you're clearly not here to hurt me.— Magpie

Magpie is a sharpshooter and former raider, taking refuge in the Chop Shop's diner basement in the Burning Springs region of Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update.

Background[]

Magpie grew up in Ohio and has lived there for much of her life.[1] As a child before the Great War, Magpie enjoyed patronizing the Buckeye Diner, although she noted that the food declined in quality at some point.[2](Note) Although she does not mention what happened to her parents, Magpie did have a younger brother, who eventually came to live in Highway Town after the apocalypse.[3]

Meanwhile, Magpie fell in with a different crowd; more specifically, she became a raider. She joined the Rust King's Army and became known for her proficiency with firearms, widely recognized as a skilled sharpshooter and marksman.[4][5] Magpie saw the Rust King's Army as a family in their own right; despite their penchant for brutality, she found a place in their "twisted, weird family." She interacted with people who became raiders because they felt as though they had no other options, as well as those who made a conscious decision to adopt the lifestyle.[6] She also became familiar with Spike, a raider from another gang who, she says, did "horrific" things.[7]

The Rust, a toxic phenomenon affecting the Burning Springs region post-War, eventually claimed Magpie's brother as a victim, as he was struck with a serious illness to which he eventually succumbed.[8] Magpie has had a fair amount of time to process her brother's death, and while she still considers it a sore spot, she no longer puts herself down over the subject, remarking that her brother would not want her to be sad over his passing.[9] After her brother's death, Magpie became inspired by his positive attitude in life, always wanting to make the best out of a difficult world, and sought to separate herself from the violent life in which she had found herself.[3]

To that end, Magpie abandoned the Rust King's Army and went into hiding.[4] However, at some point, Magpie became afflicted with the same illness, caused by the Rust, that her brother suffered from, a common phenomenon in Burning Springs. This has left her with a noticeable dry cough and a poor diagnosis for her future, harboring many of the same symptoms that her brother had.[10] Magpie attempted to scrounge up the caps she would need to acquire medicine, mostly via gambling; she also took out a loan of 178 caps (with interest) from Gregory Dixon in Highway Town. However, she was never able to acquire exactly what she needed and ended up indebted to Gregory.[11][12] She hunkered down in the basement of the Buckeye Diner, inspired by her childhood memories there, while also noting the advantages of hiding in a basement filled with preservatives.[2]

However, by 2105, the area surrounding the Chop Shop has become overrun with Rust raiders practicing cannibalism, forcing Magpie to stay hidden in the basement, setting up traps and killing any Rust raiders who venture down.[13] She refuses to leave, having staked her claim on the area by virtue of being there first.[14] All the while, her debt to Gregory Dixon remains an albatross around her neck, to the point she says that she would be hunted down if she did reemerge.[15] Although she is committed to separating herself from, at the very least, unjustified killing,[16] she is still recognized in the area for her skills as a marksman. Although she lacks confidence in her combat skills since becoming sick,[17] Magpie's notoriety makes her a potential candidate for assisting a revolution against the Rust King.[18] Eugene (in reality, Spike) even claims she may have the highest kill count in the region, though it is unclear if this is true, or an attempt on his part to incentivize recruiting her to the revolution.[18][5]

Magpie can be convinced to see the revolution as a way for her to potentially do something good for once,[19] especially with the potential for an early death from the Rust's illness looming;[17] additionally, Magpie believes it would be what her brother would want her to do.[19] She aims to free herself from debt before joining, though she grapples with an internal conflict over the use of violence to attain such ends.[7]

Personality[]

Well I hope it's been fun getting to know me *cough* I am fairly cool.— Magpie

Despite her difficult circumstances, Magpie maintains a warm sense of humor, as most conversations feature her being snarky,[20] joking[21] and playful.[22] She will sarcastically refer to the Vault 76 dweller with the nickname of "hero."[23] She enjoys singing and humming to herself,[24][25] but also indulges in gambling, as she suffers from an addiction to it; she uses her dire straits as an explanation for her gambling, but also admits that she enjoys it on its face,[26] and she applies her gambler's mindset to even the most mundane of topics.[27]

Keeping her brother's memory in mind as her inspiration, Magpie has resolved to cast aside her violent past and model her future behavior after him and his cheery disposition.[3] However, she is still more than capable of and very willing to defend herself, given she is stuck in a basement with cannibals on the other side of the door.[28] She is also willing to kill and fight again when joining the plan to overthrow the Rust King.[29] Her struggle with violence comes from trying to stop herself from causing undeserved death; she wants to be free from her debt to Gregory Dixon but is hesitant to use violence to solve the issue in that particular case. With her new mindset, she is especially repulsed at the idea of reveling in such violence.[16][30] Even if Gregory is a "bad guy,"[30] Magpie knows the old version of herself would, in fact, have just killed him, and therein lies the origin of her hesitance, as she attempts to move on from her raiding days.[31]

Nevertheless, Magpie may be led to believe that overthrowing the Rust King and fighting in a revolution against the raiders would be the right thing to do, seeing it as a newly-discovered purpose in life, to do some good in spite of her likely shortened lifespan.[19][17] Alternatively, if Gregory Dixon is killed and his death is celebrated, Magpie may be turned off of the revolution entirely, disgusted with the notion of playing God, much like the Rust King himself.[32] This is especially demotivating given Spike, now using the alias of Eugene, is the one formulating the plan,[7] and Magpie is ultimately right to distrust him.[33]

    • If the player frees Magpie of her debt peacefully (or lies and tells her that they did), she will agree to join the revolution.
    • If the player kills Gregory Dixon (or lies and tells her that they did), she will refuse to join the revolution out of disgust.
  • When the Rust Settles: If Magpie joined the revolution in the previous quest, she will be found dead in the Rust Kingdom arena, following Eugene's betrayal.

Notes[]

  • ^ (Note) Although not explicitly stated that Magpie's adolescence was in the pre-War period, the Buckeye Diner was a pre-War establishment and the Buckeye Diner's ledger indicates their change in ingredients to human meat occurred in June 2077, aligning with Magpie's statement about when the food got "crappier."[2]
  • A note titled Magpie's song, containing poetry written by Magpie, is found in the game's files and appears to be associated with the quest Insurrection, but it has no reference records and does not appear to be implemented as of the Burning Springs Public Test Server.
  • Magpie will always die if she is convinced to join Eugene's revolution in the wake of his betrayal; thus, the way to ensure she survives the events of the quest line is to actually upset her by killing Gregory Dixon. Although she does live if she refuses to join the revolution, Magpie disappears from the game world after When the Rust Settles and cannot be spoken to again.

Magpie: "It was my favorite as a kid. *cough* The food got crappier at some point, but I always liked it. Plus there's a nice yummy benefit of a basement filled with preserves!"
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Vault 76 dweller: "So, why did you leave the raiders?"
Magpie: "Can't a girl just do something without being questioned all the time? Sorry, I'm just messing with you. I had a little brother, lived in Highway Town. He always saw the best in people. The best in this shitty world. I wanted to be more like him, get away from all the violence."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 Vault 76 dweller: "Who is the girl?"
Eugene: "Her name is Magpie. She was a raider for the Rust Kingdom, before she left and went into hiding. I'm not sure what caused her to run. But she's very good with a gun; one of the best."
    (Eugene's dialogue)
  5. 5.0 5.1 Eugene: "After you've recruited the muscle, we need a sharpshooter too. An ex-raider and an expert marksman - easily has the biggest kill count in the area. We definitely need her skills for this fight. Name's Magpie. Last I heard, she's held up at the old diner - been there a while. She's going nowhere, find Leonard first."
    (Eugene's dialogue)
  6. Vault 76 dweller: "What was it like, in the raiders?"
Magpie: "Surprisingly, not that bad. Pretty brutal sometimes, but they were almost like my family. A twisted, weird family. If I'm honest, I think a lot of them were raiders because they didn't feel like they had a choice. Others, though. Definitely had a choice."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  7. 7.0 7.1 7.2 Magpie: "I just wanted you to pay off my debt. Not kill the man. That wasn't the deal. This... violence. It's not something I want to be a part of. And Spike? I'm not working with you. Someone who can do things as horrific as you...That's not something you should get involved with either. You're both on your own for that fight. Seems like you don't need me anyway."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  8. Vault 76 dweller: "Where is your brother now?"
Magpie: "Ugh... I thought the past tense would make it obvious. He's gone. He uh... He was just too sick. He didn't deserve that, but the world is cruel."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  9. Vault 76 dweller: "I'm sorry."
Magpie: "Hey, it's all cool. I've had a long time to deal with it. It's still sore, sure, but there's no point in beating myself up. He wouldn't want me to be sad about it, anyway. He was never sad. I want to be more like that."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  10. Vault 76 dweller: "What sickness?"
Magpie: "All this coughing *cough*, it's what he had too. We don't really know what it is, but it seems like a lot of people have the same symptoms around here."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  11. Highway Town terminal entries; information station, Customer Records
  12. Vault 76 dweller: "Why do you owe this guy all those caps?"
Magpie: "I needed the caps to get medicine. For obvious reasons. I tried a couple things, mainly gambling. But, it wasn't enough."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  13. Magpie: "Gotta make sure those traps are set up again."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  14. Vault 76 dweller: "Why are you staying down here with all these raiders?"
Magpie: "Not my fault those cannibals took over. I moved in first, and I'm not leaving."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  15. Magpie: "I... I got into some shady crap, okay? Now some creepy guy is waiting for any sign of me out there. At best, I lose a few fingers. At worst, I go to an early grave. Either way, I'm not a fan of that."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  16. 16.0 16.1 Magpie: "Wait what? You... *cough* You killed him? This... This isn't what I wanted. Why did you do that? I asked you to pay off my debt. I... Did... Did he suffer?"
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  17. 17.0 17.1 17.2 Vault 76 dweller: "How do you feel about fighting again, this time in a revolt?"
Magpie: "A revolt? Hah, I might've been a good fighter a while ago, but I don't do that anymore. Anyway, sounds like a one-way ticket to an early grave. If I'm not killed by... you know, something else."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  18. 18.0 18.1 Eugene: "To go against someone like that, we need more people. There's three of them, in the surrounding area, that are notorious for killing his men. Lucky for you, one of them is right here in Highway Town. Head down to the Underbelly below. There's a room at the far end, with an American flag. Inside, an intercom will ask you for a password; it's "Brahmin"."
    (Eugene's dialogue)
  19. 19.0 19.1 19.2 Magpie: "No kidding. Spike, I mean... "Eugene", filled me in on the details of this revolt. I'm not opposed to helping. It's time I do something good, for once. It's what my brother would want. You'll all probably die without me there anyway. But I'm not happy about working with a liar like Eugene. I'll see you in the Kingdom, hero."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  20. Vault 76 dweller: "Are you Magpie?"
Magpie: "Oh cool. *cough* We're on a first name basis. Most killers don't learn their victims name, so you're clearly not here to hurt me."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  21. Vault 76 dweller: "You keep coughing. Are you sick or something?"
Magpie: "Sick of your bullshit. Sorry, bad joke."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  22. Vault 76 dweller: "It sounds like a sticky situation, I'm gonna need more incentive."
Magpie: "It's almost adorable that you think I can give you anything more. I haven't got anything for you other than my *coughing* sick fighting skills!"
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  23. Vault 76 dweller: "Let me help."
Magpie: "Okay, hero. I owe a guy some money."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  24. Magpie: "*singing*"
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  25. Magpie: "*humming*"
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  26. Vault 76 dweller: "So, gambling, huh?"
Magpie: "Look, I had to do it. But I'd be lying if I said part of me didn't really like it."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  27. Magpie: "I bet 50 caps that there'll be a dust storm tomorrow... If I had them. Or had someone to bet with."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  28. Vault 76 dweller: "I can get you out of this rotting basement."
Magpie: "This rotting basement is the only thing standing between me, and the barrel of a gun."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  29. Magpie: "I'm excited to fight with you."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  30. 30.0 30.1 Vault 76 dweller: "Hell yeah! I made sure he did."
Magpie: "Urgh! You're twisted! I know he was a bad guy, but you're reveling in killing someone."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  31. Magpie: "He's some loan shark, hiding out in an office in Highway Town. When I was trying to find some caps to pay him off, I found this old note that talked about a good chunk of 'em. But, I couldn't journey that far. Not without help. Old me would've just killed him. But now... I'm not so sure. So you find those caps, pay him off, and we're good. Got it? Here's the note. I'll be waiting here for when you're back."
    (Magpie's dialogue)
  32. Magpie: "Well it wasn't up to you to play God! You're as bad as the Rust King."
