Leonard is a nomadic, raider-killing wastelander in the Burning Springs region of Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update.
Background[]
Leonard had a life of his own before the Great War, marrying a woman with whom he had a son, Owen.[1] They had secured placement in a Vault to the east of Ohio, but by the time the Great War struck, Leonard and his family did not make it in time.[2]
In lieu of a Vault-Tec Corporation facility, Leonard and his family took up residence in a "crappy" bunker after the bombs dropped; although it was not a high-quality residence, Leonard saw it as better than the surface. Additionally, Leonard and his wife fell in with a group of raiders in order to survive. However, at some point, Leonard's wife became pregnant again. The two of them attempted to conceal the pregnancy from the raiders, but this became increasingly difficult as her visible pregnancy soon became obvious. One day, the other raiders in the gang sent Leonard off on his own, and when he returned, his wife was dead. The other raiders attempted to convince him that she had died by suicide, but Leonard saw through this, believing they had murdered her. In retaliation, Leonard killed the other raiders, at which point he discovered he had a talent for fighting, or if one took a dimmer view of his actions, for murder. Either way, Leonard now feels numb to the memory of killing the raiders and has moved on, now seeking to protect his son, Owen, from the dangers of the wasteland.[3]
Leonard and Owen attempted to settle down in Highway Town, the most well-protected settlement in Burning Springs, but he was displeased with the perceived selfishness of its residents and the presence of bounty hunters there, seeing their activities as "shady" and not wanting his son to be caught up in it.[4] As such, Leonard has developed a nomadic survivalist lifestyle, moving from place to place and killing what he needs to in order to survive,[5] all the while remaining protective of Owen.[6] He has developed a knack for locating and scavenging essentials such as food and water.[7]
According to Eugene, Leonard has allegedly gained a reputation in the Burning Springs region for killing raiders, including raiders from the Rust King's Army.[8] Eugene describes Leonard's reputation in the area as him being a "wild-card" and potentially somewhat crazy and frightening. However, Eugene also relates rumors of Leonard battling a deathclaw by himself, with these skills and notoriety making him a potential candidate for assisting a revolution against the Rust King.[9] It is unclear if Eugene's description of Leonard is wholly true, or an attempt on his part to incentivize recruiting him to the revolution; when asked about the deathclaw rumors, Leonard is non-committal, scoffing and saying "make up your own mind about it."[10]
As of 2105, Leonard recognizes that he is growing old,[11] wanting to protect his lungs[12] and occasionally incoherently mumbling to himself.[13] Although he is normally on the move, Leonard has held up in the railroad service yard since Owen's disappearance to the southeast. He shows a great degree of anxiety and paranoia, worrying greatly for his son's wellbeing. However, Leonard does not want to venture out from his hiding place in case Owen returns while he is gone, and he runs the risk of coming across the worst case scenario, Owen's death, of which he could not bear the thought.[6]
Unbeknownst to Leonard, Owen has in fact been murdered, apparently by raiders seeking vengeance against Leonard for killing their men.[14] If Leonard is informed of Owen's death and told that he was killed by raiders, Leonard will channel his grief into anger, wanting to take up arms against the raiders in the region and aiming to kill "every last one" of them, especially the Rust King.[15][16][17] If Owen's manner of death is concealed from Leonard, he will quickly fall into a deep depression, too focused on grieving and feeling lost without knowing how his son died to assist in the doomed plan to rebel against the Rust King, though he remains supportive of it from the sidelines.[18][19]

Notes[]
- Leonard never clarifies which raider gang he ran with, only saying that he lived in a bunker at the time, as well. The script notes for one line of dialogue say that raiders have "killed everyone he's ever loved," as he vows to kill "every last one of those goddamn raiders, especially the one they call King," although this does not explicitly confirm that he was a member of the Rust King's Army, as he never specifically mentions the Rust King or his army elsewhere beyond this line.[20] Eugene also describes Leonard as a "lone survivor," in contrast to him directly calling Magpie an ex-raider.[21]
- Leonard, at one point, visited the Chop Shop after it became occupied by cannibal Rust raiders, and he heard "inhuman grunts" (unknowingly, that of a wendigo), warning others to be careful in that area.[22][23]
- If asked what he knows about Abraxodyne Chemical, Leonard says he does not know much other than the fact he previously used their cleaning products to get grease out of his overalls.[24] This mention of grease on overalls, combined with an idle line in which Leonard says he has misplaced a wrench, implies he may have some experience with handyman repair work, although he never directly specifies his previous occupation.[25]
- Inside the train carriage at the railroad service yard where Leonard is found, there are a number of tally marks written in chalk. It is never confirmed what these tally marks are supposed to stand for, whether days passed, raiders killed, or something else entirely.
- Leonard will always die if he is convinced to join Eugene's revolution in the wake of his betrayal; thus, the way to ensure Leonard survives the events of the quest line is to actually upset him by concealing Owen's cause of death. Although he does live if he refuses to join the revolution, Leonard disappears from the game world after When the Rust Settles and cannot be spoken to again.
