Track down a clandestine group with a highly unusual offer.

Leap of Faith is a main quest in Fallout 76, introduced in the Ghoul Within update. It is the first of two quests that lead the player to choose if they want to become a ghoul.

The quest is unlocked after reaching level 50, and is started by listening to a distress signal.

Quick walkthrough[]

Detailed walkthrough[]

The quest can be started after the player character reaches level 50. Access the Radio section of the Pip-Boy, where a distress signal should be able to be selected and heard from anywhere in Appalachia. The distress signal is broadcast by a scavenger named Leamon Price, who was attacked by mysterious, masked bandits, and plans to seek treatment at the Whitespring Refuge. The quest is fully activated and available once the distress signal has been listened to.

Travel to the Whitespring, where Leamon is receiving some bad news from the Responder medic. Although his gunshot wounds from the attack were not as serious as first thought, he has, on the other hand, suffered from sever radiation sickness that will kill him within a few weeks. When Leamon asks the medic if there is anything else that can be done for him, she hesitantly mentions a rumor she has heard about a "radiation specialist" in the hills to the north of the Savage Divide. If the player offers to help Leamon seek out this specialist, they can either lend a hand with no strings attached, or pass a Charisma 8+ check to ask for compensation. With the latter option, Leamon says he does not have many caps left, but offers a lead ore instead.

After agreeing to assist Leamon, the map marker is set to the area surrounding the hillside cavern, situated north of the Bailey family cabin and Vault 79. Once there, proceed into the location's interior through the cavern entrance, and follow the linear path in the cave downwards. Eventually, the player will reach a destroyed concrete wall with a hole; just past it is a hallway for a missile silo, where Leamon is being held up by a ghoul in a mask. Leamon tells the player that the ghoul is one of the bandits who attacked him and his group. This bandit, Kevan Asherton, is a member of the reclusive Revenants faction. Advance the conversation with Kevan, during which he reveals that he intends to kill Leamon.

At that point, a woman named Parthenia Blankenship runs down the hallway and interrupts the conversation. She explains that the "radiation specialist" rumor was disseminated by the Revenants to help other ghouls (and "potential" ghouls) find them and become part of their ranks. Parthenia rejects Kevan's plan to kill Leamon, and instead proposes that they turn Leamon into a ghoul instead. Parthenia has been working on a procedure to artificially induce and speed up the process of ghoulification. She believes that becoming a ghoul is a net benefit; although Kevan vehemently disagrees with this philosophy, he lets Parthenia continue with the pitch to let Leamon become a ghoul.

Leamon becomes convinced and says that, faced with either certain death or a "makeover," he is open to Parthenia's procedure. Parthenia explains that she has a base formula ready at her laboratory, but it requires irradiated ore. Leamon suggests extracting some from Emmett Mountain disposal site, where he used to scavenge, but is too ill to go there himself. Instead, the player will go under the supervision of Kevan. Leamon gives them a key to access a separate operation from the main tunnel, away from prying eyes.

Travel to the Emmett Mountain disposal site, and enter the shed on top of the southeastern hill to find the hatch for the side tunnel. Proceeding through the side tunnel, the player meets Kevan, and the two must fight off several feral ghouls. If asked, Kevan explains that attacks from feral ghouls are never a sure thing one way or the other, and everyone, including normal ghouls, must take their chances with ferals.

The next step is to unlock the gate on the northwestern side of the tunnel for Kevan to go through and extract the needed ore. The player must stand guard and fend off more feral ghouls while Kevan does this. Eventually, the feral ghoul attacks stop, but a scavenger named Madeline Keene walks into the side tunnel. After asking the player who they are, Kevan returns, startling Madeline and causing her to recognize him as one of the bandits who attacked Leamon and the other scavengers.

Kevan makes his intention to kill Madeline clear. For the first dialogue option (after Kevan says "Look, I'm sorry, scavver, but you weren't ever supposed to be a part of this."), the player has three options, but they do not matter and the conversation continues. Instead, the next selection of dialogue options (after Kevan says "I can't let that happen again.") is what matters. At this point, the player has a number of options:

  • Strength 8+: Intimidate Kevan into backing down.
  • Charisma 8+: Convince Kevan to let Madeline go peacefully.
  • Agree with Kevan and encourage him to kill Madeline using more passive or aggressive dialogue.
  • Try to make Kevan let Madeline go without passing any checks, which fails to convince him, and he kills her anyway.

However Madeline is dealt with, Kevan says it is time to return to Parthenia's laboratory. Upon arriving back at the hillside cavern and entering Parthenia's lab, Kevan has already delivered the ore to Parthenia, and she is wrapping up work developing an inhaler to use to expedite the ghoulification process. The quest objective is set to "help Leamon make a decision," though the player can also optionally talk to Kevan for his input. Kevan wants to dissuade Leamon and the player from becoming ghouls, while Parthenia tries to encourage it. Alongside other questions and dialogue options, there are two choices for dealing with Leamon:

  • Encourage Leamon to become a ghoul. He will become a member of the Revenants and reside at their main base, Radiant Hills (in its instanced interior), after completion of this quest and fast traveling back to revisit.
  • Encourage Leamon to stay as a human. He will accept his mortality and plan on returning to Emmett Mountain to have a satisfying last few nights with his friends, and he will disappear from the game after leaving through the cavern.

Once Leamon has made his decision with the player's advice, the quest is complete. However, Parthenia also says she wants to have a conversation with the player character, leading into the next quest, A Fresh Pair of Genes.
