Paladin Krieg was a paladin of the Capital Wasteland chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel. He is a mentioned-only character in Fallout 4 and appears in Fallout Shelter Online.

Background[]

Serving as a paladin prior to 2277, Krieg led a squad that counted Danse (an initiate at the time) among its ranks; Krieg served as the sponsor for Danse and his close friend Cutler after both were drawn to the Brotherhood during a recruitment drive in Rivet City.[1] Considered by Danse to be a loyal and dedicated member of the Brotherhood, according to him, Krieg pushed Danse harder than most of his other recruits during their time together, though he did not understand why at the time.

Around a year into Danse's service onboard the Prydwen, Paladin Krieg's squad, including Danse, was sent on a mission to clear out a feral ghoul lair. Krieg had the squad split up to cover more ground, giving Danse a chance to show the fruits of his training. When Danse reported back, Krieg broke the news to him that Cutler's squad had been ambushed, with Cutler MIA, presumed KIA. Danse immediately asked for permission to search but Krieg had to deny his request, citing they needed the permission of Lancer-Captain Kells to stage any operations of that scale but that the paladin would try.[2] Danse later went AWOL for three weeks to look for Cutler in the super mutant lair where he went missing; during that time, Krieg tried to call him back via radio, but Danse refused until he could find evidence of his brother's survival.[3]

Circa 2277, amidst the Brotherhood-Enclave War, Paladin Krieg was deployed as part of the vanguard for the Brotherhood's assault on the Enclave stronghold at Adams Air Force Base , where he was killed in action. Danse, having become a paladin and a squad leader himself by that time, received word of his mentor's death after the battle. Danse took the news of his former sponsor's death harshly at the time, but he eventually came to realize that the reason why Krieg seemed to single him out was the same for why he himself might take a similar approach to sponsoring the Sole Survivor years later: because they genuinely believe in their subordinate's potential to do great things for the Brotherhood and do not want it to go to waste.[4]

Appearances[]

Paladin Krieg appears in Fallout Shelter Online in Danse's Hero Biography and is mentioned in Fallout 4.

  1. Paladin Danse: "Let me start at the beginning. I grew up alone in the Capital Wasteland. Spent most of my childhood picking through the ruins and selling scrap. When I was a bit older, and had a few caps to my name, I moved into Rivet City and opened a junk stand. While I was there, I met a guy named Cutler. We got along pretty well, watched each other's backs and kept each other out of trouble. When the Brotherhood came through on a recruiting run, we felt like it was the best way out of our nowhere lives, so we joined up."

  4. Paladin Danse: "When I was an Initiate, my sponsor was Paladin Krieg. Toughest squad leader I ever served with. He was a model soldier, embodying the values every trainee was striving to achieve. Fiercely loyal, secure in his beliefs and brave to a fault. From the moment I was assigned to his squad I was singled out... it felt like he was pushing me harder than the rest of the team. I fought by his side for years and we had some seriously close calls, but he never explained to me why I was treated that way."
The Sole Survivor: "It sounds like he was trying to motivate you."
Paladin Danse: "If he was, I never got a chance to ask. After I was promoted to Paladin and I had moved on to my own squad, I received word that Krieg was killed at Adams Air Force Base. The news was like being kicked in the stomach. I mean, I'd lost some of my brothers and sisters before, but his death... well, it really got to me. It's taken me a long time to realize it, but the reason Krieg was so tough on me is the same reason I'm so tough on you. It's because I believe in you and I don't want to see any of your potential go to waste."
The Sole Survivor: "I'm flattered that you have so much faith in me."
Paladin Danse: "You've earned that faith by your own hand. Well, I've said what I had to say and I hope that it meant something to you. I... trust you'll keep this in confidence of course. Some of that information was of a personal nature, and well, I'd like to keep it that way."
