WHAT IS IT? THE LOBOTOMITE IS ASKING ME THINGS, O, AND I AM TRYING TO IGNORE THEM. MY PROCESSORS CAN'T IGNORE YOU BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

Doctor Klein is a pre-War scientist and the leader of the Think Tank operating in Big MT in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.

Background[]

Once an esteemed doctor and serving in the role of the Chief/Head Researcher of Logistical Operations and "Ideology" at the Big MT Research and Development Center, sometime after the Great War devastated the U.S.A., the future Dr. Klein and his fellow executives underwent a procedure to extract their brains and place them in robotic think tank shells to continue their work.

At some point before 2281, the Think Tank's amoral and irrational research methods compelled their colleague, the future Doctor Mobius, to use his own knowledge to hack into their robotic forms, erasing their memories of the world beyond Big MT and of pre-War America, in an effort to restrain the Think Tank's destructive potential. However, he was forced to leave them and shelter in the "Forbidden Zone" where he sends a looped message of threats of death and destruction to reinforce their warped mindset.

Personality[]

Klein frequently demonstrates an incredible overconfidence in his intelligence, as he shows absolutely no grasp of the purpose or function of the advanced technology he tasks the Courier to retrieve. He also remains very disrespectful of his colleagues and often ignores and criticizes them for suggesting what actions the Think Tank should take. He also proves that he is not above deliberately censoring or outright ignoring evidence that would discredit him.[1]

Along with his original name and human memories, Klein has lost much of his knowledge of human anatomy, and refers to the Courier's fingers and toes as "penises."[1] He is shown to fear and hate Dr. Mobius, although they were partners at one time. He often pompously asserts his status as a head researcher, using that to override his colleagues and ignore their advice, as well as to justify being rude to them.[1]

Notes[]

  • Comments made by Mobius about what the scientists have forgotten, particularly friendship, appear to be aimed at Dr. Klein, who barely acknowledges his colleagues, and even regards them more as understudies or employees than his friends.
  • Throughout the Old World Blues add-on, Klein speaks in a very loud voice, apparently the result of either his fellow executives or Elijah having interfered with the volume control on his chassis; his dialogue being entirely written in uppercase reflects this.
  • Klein expresses a hatred for the words "mutiny" and "jism."
  • Inside Klein's house in Higgs Village, directly above the door, is a large Old World flag. This could imply Klein was or still is an American patriot at times when he can remember the past, potentially explaining his willingness to impart the dangerous knowledge he gave to Ulysses.
  • Klein is responsible for the destruction of the Y-0 research center, although he refuses to admit it.
  • Despite his hostility against Mobius, he shows he is to consider him as a partner and work for him, should one complete Old World Blues by masquerading as Mobius in the Courier's body.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Doctor Klein appears only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.

Behind the scenes[]

  • His name is a reference to the mathematician Felix Klein who created the Klein bottle, a two-dimensional non-orientable object in four-dimensional space, an equivalent to the Mobius strip.
  • The three perks that he can give the Courier (Heartless, Brainless, and Spineless) are references to The Wizard of Oz: the scarecrow was missing a brain, the tin man was missing a heart, and the lion was missing courage. This is mentioned by multiple characters throughout the add-on.
Klein served the role of the "stuffy Dean of a college." He's the head lab manager, who is the voice of authority and the threat - (he's one of the more sane members and ones able to act with some level of authority). If he wasn't there, I don't think the Think Tank would have much of a sense of menace, and that's Klein's story role — to be a big, stuffy, and potentially dangerous jerk. That was my sole goal with him - considering how bat**** crazy the others are, I needed someone with a slightly level head.Chris Avellone, Old World Questions

Dala: "I cannot stand a breathing, a sweet breathing organism, breathing in, and out, to suddenly not breathe. We must keep it alive. For study. Slow study."

Doctor 0: "*Klein, uh... you know, this Lobotomite, it's a great sounding board. You respect Idea-ology, right? This one's... well, it's... got good ideas.*"
Klein: "SILENCE, DR. O. THIS IS A THINK TANK DECISION. SAVE YOUR OBJECTIONS UNTIL AFTER I HAVE DECIDED OUR COURSE OF ACTION."
0: "*You know what, Klein? Stick a straw in your tank and suck yourself. Long and deep.* *And my name is Zero - yeah, a big fat zero, with a slash through it.*"

8: "AUDIO: Dr. 8 suggests a plan of action."
Klein: "ET 2, 8? WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE THIS? YOU'VE NEVER REFUSED TO COMMIT NECESSARY... SURGERY BEFORE. AND THIS LOBOTOMITE NEEDS ITS SURGERY."

Klein: "A NOBLE SPEECH, BUT... THERE IS NO ROOM IN MY VOCABULATORS FOR "FRIEND" AND "LOBOTOMITE" IN THE SAME SENTENCE. THE VERY CONCEPT - REVOLTING. PERHAPS YOU ARE IRRADIATED WITH CAMARADERIE RADIATION. WE HAVE CHEMS FOR THAT, WE CAN SAVE YOU FROM YOUR EMOTIONAL... ADDICTION."
Borous: "-If I may, I feel as if I must be the voice of reason here.- -This Lobotomite is much like us, regarding even animals and pets as nothing more than avenues to promote Science! There is good here.- -Instead of ending its life on the table, we should prolong its suffering, in the name of Science. Like good old Gabe, the FINEST of lab specimens.-"
Klein: "WHY AM I EVEN LISTENING TO YOU FOOLS? ENOUGH OF THIS MUTINOUS CHORUS! IF THERE'S A WORD I HATE, IT'S "MUTINY." AND THE WORD "JISM," WHICH NEVER MADE ANY SENSE TO ME. IT'S RIDICULOUS, PUTTING "J" AND "SM" TOGETHER LIKE THAT. NONSENSE! I COUNT AS FIVE. LIKE THE MIGHTY HUMAN HAND I ONCE HAD, WITH ITS FIVE PENISES CLENCHED IN A FIST."
(Klein's, Dala's, 0's, 8's, and Borous' dialogue) Note: This is the full good ending to the Old World Blues add-on with the option to help Doctor 0 with fleshing out his name as "0" rather than "O".
