The katana (刀 or かたな) is a weapon type that originates from the pre-War nation of Japan which has appeared multiple times in the Fallout series.
Background[]
A katana is a type of Japanese sword, traditionally made with a blade length greater than 23.6-28.7 inches (60-73 centimeters) and characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade; a circular or squared guard; and a long grip that can accommodate two hands. It was often called a "samurai sword" or "samurai's sword" because of its extensive use as the personal armament of the namesake warriors, leading to it becoming a symbol of the samurai caste in Japanese culture.
Renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability, its origins go back at least as far as the Kamakura period (1185–1333). Most often held with two hands, some techniques and combat styles were performed with a one-handed grip. The katana was generally carried in a saya, or scabbard, manufactured from lightweight wood, with a coat of lacquer on the exterior and a wooden knob on one side for attaching a braided cord.
By the 23rd century following the nuclear apocalypse, the art of crafting katanas has been rediscovered by wasteland weaponsmiths inhabiting the former American landscape such as the Gun Runners, a group rising from small pickings in the Hub to become the premier manufacturer of weapons, from blades to shotguns to sniper rifles, in New California, with the militaries of the New California Republic as their biggest customers.
Variants[]
Katana[]

Created in the factory forges owned by the weapon manufacturers known as the Gun Runners, the wasteland katana's design closely replicates that of its pre-War predecessor and serves as one of the deadliest items on the modern arms market, with a price in caps to match.
Samurai's sword[]

The personal weapon of the displaced samurai Toshiro Kago, it was separated from its master after his capture and being cryogenically frozen by the Zetan crew of Mothership Zeta. Upon his revival by the Lone Wanderer in 2277, he earnestly seeks its retrieval.
