The KPSS radio station is a location in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

The radio station was constructed at the base of Hollywood Hills near the city of Los Angeles, California, on a forested hill surrounded by desert.

By the late 2290s, the sole occupant of KPSS is the radio host Carl, who fills the airtime entirely with a large collection of vintage music, particularly fiddle music. Carl does not take visitors at the station, with an array of defensive traps, including massive bear traps and makeshift crossbows linked to tripwires, surrounding the main building to ensure anyone looking to place a request or make a complaint about his choice of music would sooner have an arrow lodged in their vital parts.[1] The station exterior is littered with the displayed heads of those Carl refers to as his "critics" who have tried and failed to take him off the air (or at least change up his tracklist) in the past.[2]

In the TV series[]

The Radio[]

After abandoning CX404 at the Red Rocket gas station, Thaddeus eventually arrives at the radio station carrying Siggi Wilzig's head and requests the usage of Carl's broadcasting equipment to get a message to the Brotherhood of Steel for retrieval, meanwhile complimenting his choice of music which Carl appreciates.[2]

Sometime later, he spots Lucy MacLean and Maximus approaching and, still viewing the latter as a traitor to the Brotherhood, attempts to shoot at them with his 10mm pistol but misses every shot. While stumbling back, Thaddeus ends up triggering one of Carl's traps and gets a crossbow bolt shot through his neck. He only survives the damage due to the onset of his ghoulification from an elixir he got from the snake oil salesman that regenerates the wound.[2]

Thaddeus realizes however that once the Brotherhood learns of his mutation, they will execute him immediately, to which Lucy is confused about why the "good guys" would do that only for both Brotherhood members to agree that it's "complicated." Maximus then asks Thaddeus to hand over the head and artifact and tells him to flee, which Thaddeus does after first thanking his former comrade. Maximus then gives Wilzig's head to Lucy and takes one of the critic heads, disfiguring it to make it unrecognizable to the Brotherhood so that he could buy Lucy time to bring the real head to Moldaver and save her father. Before leaving, Lucy gives him a kiss and a promise that she will wait for him to meet her at Vault 33. Maximus smiles before turning to face the approaching squad of vertibirds.[2]

Appearance[]

The KPSS radio station appears only in the Fallout TV series episode "The Radio."

Notes[]

The instrumental fiddle music playing during the scenes at KPSS was originally composed by Heather MacArthur and previously appeared in Fallout 4 as a track played on Radio Freedom, the radio station associated with the Commonwealth Minutemen. To that end, Prime Video X-Ray and the series' official soundtrack identify the version used in the show as "Minutemen Radio."[3]

  1. DJ Carl (via radio): "Hey-yo, this Is DJ Carl at KPSS, broadcasting from the base of the once-beautiful Hollywood Hills. Like most weeks here at KPSS, this week is fiddle week, when all of my airtime will be spent luxuriating in my small but mighty collection of fiddle tunes. So, I'd encourage you to sit back and enjoy the folksy, gutsy sound of bygone fiddlers. And, if you don't like what you hear, just a reminder that I don't take visitors to the station. A simple postcard will suffice. That said, enjoy the fiddling."
