K-9 is a robotic canine, and a joinable NPC companion in 2241. He can be found in Doc Schreber's office at the Navarro facility. He is non-operational when first found, and requires some physical repairs.

The K-9 hates Doc Schreber with a passion, despite being programmed to be his assistant. The player must also kill Schreber before K-9 will join his party, and keep up a relatively good karma and reputation. However, if the PC becomes a Childkiller, or their karma drops below -101 or more, K-9 will leave the party permanently.

How to obtain K-9

To obtain K-9, you must complete two requirements:

  • The player must repair K-9's leg mechanisms with a drive mechanism. One is available in the mechanic's shop right on the Enclave base inside a locker. Using this part on K-9 will fix him (this does not use the repair skill); no other repairs are required.
  • The player must kill Doc Schreber. It is recommended that he/she closes the sound lab door first, considering it is sound-proofed, and will prevent a fight against the rest of the base.

Statistics

K-9 has level progression.

Parentheses denote level 5 stats.

Notes

  • Because he is a "dog" character, he could be Fallout 2's "official" variant of Dogmeat. (Dogmeat does still appear as a character in Fallout 2, but that's not canonical because it occurs during a special encounter.)
  • If the player lies to Skynet about being Dixon while having K9 waiting outside the Sierra Army Depot, K9 will turn hostile when Skynet does. This can be fixed by escaping SAD without killing K9.
  • His stats are superior to the other cyberdog in Fallout 2, the Robodog.
  • K9 is one of the few characters that will join the player with IN < 4

Behind the scenes

  • The name "K-9" is a pun on the word "canine".
