- Almost every companion will initiate dialogue with him. Preston will ask for a cold drink, Cait for "what's under the table," Deacon for moonshine, Strong for water, Danse for a non-alcoholic beverage, and Curie for a tour guide or a pamphlet.
- Joe will sometimes refer to the Sole Survivor as "he" even if the Sole Survivor is female.
- The phrase "Deathclaw Preservation Society" may be a reference to the Capitol Preservation Society, a post-War historian organization based in Rivet City.

When first meeting him, he is talking to his son about the Railroad, and involves the player character. Choosing the dialogue option "Saving synths sounds noble" will cause Hate from Nick Valentine if he is with the player character.[verified]
