Ireland was a pre-War country located in the European Commonwealth. It is mentioned multiple times in the Fallout series.

Background[]

Originating from Celtic tribes that lived in the region, many people from Ireland have historically immigrated to the United States of America across the Atlantic Ocean. This led them to have a major influence on U.S. culture and demographics, especially in areas along the East Coast, and a prevalence of Irish-American culture across the states. One of the strongest concentrations of Irish culture was in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

Little is known about the status of the country following the nuclear apocalypse, though Colin Moriarty is stated to have come from Ireland, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the Capital Wasteland sometime before 2277. This indicates the possibility of some measure of human civilization still being present.[Non-game 1]

Mentions[]

Fallout[]

  • Patrick the Celt is descended from Americanized Celts and keeps his heritage alive by collecting clothing, food, stories, songs, and knowledge of Celtic history. He knows the Irish song "Na Gheala Mbeadh" poorly translated in Irish as "The Light Would" and possibly a mistranslation of "Mo Ghile Mear," or "My Gallant Darling."[2]

Fallout 2[]

  • John L. Sullivan references Irish folklore in his dialogue, has a distinctly Irish accent and often uses the phrase "Erin go bragh!"[3] This is an anglicized corruption of the phrase "Éirinn go Brách," which means "Ireland forever/until doomsday."

Fallout 3[]

  • According to Emil Pagliarulo, the character Colin Moriarty is genuinely of Irish descent, and apparently traveled directly to the Capital Wasteland from post-War Ireland by unknown means.[Non-game 1] He speaks in an accent that appears to capture the stereotypical depiction of an Irish accent.

Fallout 4[]

  • The Irish Pride Industries shipyard contains many references to Irish-American culture.
  • The Eddie Winter holotapes reference Irish gangs operating in the Boston area pre-War, as well as once taking a trip to Ireland in holotape 9. They also mention attempts to further Irish/Italian mob relations in Boston before the war; Eddie Winter himself was an Irish mob boss.[4]
  • The Four Leaf Clover perk icon and the logo of the Shamrock Taphouse contain the national flag of Ireland.
  • Whiskey bottles in Fallout 4 are marked as Irish whiskey and have the word "whiskey" written in the Irish language.
  • Far Harbor (add-on) Old Longfellow sings traditional Irish songs while idle including "Molly Malone," "Jug of Punch," and "Wild Rover," as identified by dialogue script notes, though it's unknown if he is of Irish descent himself.[5][6][7]
  • In a recording made by Rebecca Linkowski and Gemma, the latter says, "Oh, Rebecca! That's very rebellious of you. Drinking in Paul Revere's house. I'll get my coat and a bottle of Irish!"[8] in reference to Irish whiskey.
  • Like in Fallout 3, the Luck bobblehead in Fallout 4 depicts Vault Boy holding a four-leaf clover and wearing an Irish buckle hat, a reference to the saying, "luck of the Irish."
  • The companion Cait has an Irish accent, and she comments on others perceiving her as a "tough Irish gal,"[9] though her exact origins are left unclear in-game.

Fallout 76[]

  • Ogham, an early medieval alphabet used to write Old Irish (a forebear of the "modern" Gaelic/Irish language), is mentioned by Michael Blake, who cites it as one possibility for the script used in the writing of the Horse Creek Petroglyphs.[10]
  • Uisce Beatha is a pre-War whiskey brand that was based in Ireland.
  • Skis found in Appalachia are the Ski-O-Matic brand, with a clover logo.
  • With an Intelligence of 8 or above, the player character can display a contextual understanding of etymology within the Irish language, describing the origin of the Irish name Malone in conversation with Maul.[11]

Non-game

  1. 1.0 1.1 Emil Pagliarulo: "The East Coast of the U.S. has traditionally been really a hub of immigration. We have characters like in Megaton in Fallout 3, there's Moriarty, who is, he's Irish, and it's like 'where does he come from?' He has an Irish accent and an Irish brogue. He's from Ireland. And so, 'what is Ireland like?' We never really say, but we want you to think, 'oh, he came on some kind of - however he got there...' "
