Adventures! I want to hear about places traveled, food you have eaten, drinks enjoyed, people, friends, enemies, lovers... I have lived through plenty myself, but I'm ready to kick back for a little while. Still, that itch for life... it never truly disappears, does it?

Ineke de Haan[2] is an imported goods merchant who can be hired at the Milepost Zero branch of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company in Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Milepost Zero update. Recruiting Ineke costs 150 Supplies.

Background[]

Childhood[]

Ineke hails from the North Atlantic region of Europe.(Note 2) Her family consisted of her father and a sister, as well as several cousins; she never knew her mother.[3][4] Ineke's father ran a bakery, which had been passed down in his family for at least two generations. He would frequently bake pastries and share them amongst the family, which made him a favorite relative of Ineke's cousins. Ineke herself still considers her father the best man she has ever known.[3][5][6]

Growing up, Ineke was also close with her sister, and the two of them often played together, exploring nature, camping in the woods, or even chasing boats down canals.[7] However, while Ineke had an adventurous spirit, she was still a realist. In comparison, her sister's aspirations were less practical, or even fanciful, although this did not seriously affect the sisters' relationship.[4] Ineke also loved her homeland, not just because of her family, but also many other things: "the food, the open fields, bike rides, and the people."[8]

Career[]

Despite her love for her family and her home, wanderlust eventually took hold of Ineke. At the age of 22, she joined a large international shipping company in search of freedom on the open sea.[9] Starting out, the brunt of her work was as physical labor on cargo ships in the North Atlantic, scrubbing decks and moving boxes.[10] The work was hard, but it allowed Ineke to see the world, and also to learn English from her crewmates.[11] Over time, she worked her way up the ranks and "made the changes [she] wanted to see," but not always through official or honest means. Still, Ineke's crewmates listened to her, and eventually, she became the captain of a ship with her own crew of twenty.[1][12] This was not Ineke's goal, but she took it on as an opportunity for further adventure.[13]

As captain, Ineke mainly continued the business of traveling to one port to pick up shipments and then shipping them to other, more distant ports. Most of their cargo was innocuous: foodstuffs, furniture, apparel, tools, and "even a telescope."[9] However, this was not always the case. Under Ineke, the crew occasionally conducted "extra" shipments, smuggling narcotics and rarely weapons or exotic animals.[14] Between all the excitement, Ineke still cherished her homeland, and would exchange letters with her sister every time she came ashore on layover after a delivery.[4]

Post-War[]

Ineke and her crew happened to be at sea when the Great War struck, and so were spared from the nuclear exchange. From the ship deck, Ineke had a first hand view of the rest of the world burning, which she considers something that no one should ever have to live through. In particular, she recalls that despite the destruction, the end of the world was "eerily quiet" from their position.[15]

The crew stayed at sea for some time but were forced to dock as their resources ran out. They chose to dock at Baltimore, Maryland, because it was relatively close to where they were buoyed and several of the crew also had family there.[16] This arrangement worked for a few months without serious problems, with Ineke and her crew continuing to live on the docked ship. However, supplies soon ran low, and some of the crew -- tasting power for the first time -- "took it into their own hands" to acquire more supplies through raiding and stealing, if not worse.[17]

Ineke understood the harshness of the wasteland and beared with her crew's actions for a while. However, eventually, she could no longer stand by how they were taking advantage of defenseless people (often those who needed supplies more than they did) and chose to leave the ship; a few others with similar concerns also left, but most of the crew chose to stay and continue their raiding lifestyle.[18]

Since then, Ineke has traveled the wastes, taking on the role of an imported goods merchant: acquiring items (junk, scrap, and miscellany) from around the globe and selling them on to whoever would have them. In this way, she claims to offer to her customers a "taste of the world" and also the feeling of a less-changed past world.[19][20] She still sells essential goods such as food and clothing.[21] She has developed a web of connections who keep her informed of scavenging sites and potential inventory.[22][23]

Ineke enjoys this lifestyle, as her adventurous spirit has not quieted despite the dangers of the wasteland; in her words, she would rather be shot than live predictably.[24] This is helped by the fact that she has no family in the former United States and does not plan to change that anytime soon;[25] it also helps that she dislikes children.[26]

Shenandoah[]

Note: the following section is partially based on gameplay progression in Milepost Zero.

In 2105, a few weeks before the events of Milepost Zero, Ineke came to Shenandoah National Park and met Marley, the supervisor of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company's Skyline Valley branch. Marley offered Ineke a deal: work under Blue Ridge as a merchant in exchange for a quiet life. Ineke was hesitant about joining a new crew but eventually decided the opportunity was too good to pass up.[27] As part of this, Ineke claims to have stopped trading in illicit goods, since Marley would not condone it... although she may still be doing so, more discreetly.[14][28] With the Vault Dwellers of Vault 76 helping Blue Ridge set up their new branch, Ineke soon moved into their branch headquarters at Milepost Zero on Skyline Drive.

Ineke is initially unsure about how long she plans to stay with Blue Ridge, as she does not like to be tied down in one place for too long.[24] However, Ineke is interested in the Vault Dwellers, as she can see that they have had their own lives of adventure. She is all too happy to stay and hear their stories, to the point of giving them fairer prices than she usually would as an incentive.[29][30][31] However, as the trading operations at Milepost Zero grow in scale, Ineke ends up enjoying the location and the company of her colleagues (to varying degrees).[32] Although she still gets the "familar itch for adventure" every so often,[33][34] she ultimately decides to stay at Milepost Zero for the foreseeable future.[35]

Relationships[]

Relationship table
Family Ineke was close with her father and sister, as mentioned above. Ineke still thinks of her father as the best man she knows, and she kept regular communication with her sister through letters. Ineke thinks her sister had her "head in the clouds;" when Ineke left for the sea, her sister was unemployed and trying to pursue a career in art.[4] Ineke does not know what happened to her family during the Great War. She has come to terms with the fact that she will never see them again, but prefers to think that they are still alive.[36]
Former crew Ineke is no longer in contact with most of her former ship crew, namely the ones who chose to stay in Baltimore as raiders. She does still keep in touch with the ones who left, and they send each other letters through caravans. These crew members are still grateful to Ineke for the many years on the sea together and they are part of her merchant connections: when they find abandoned loot, they let Ineke take a cut. Ineke is grateful for their continued loyalty.[23]
Marley Ineke and Marley keep a cordial working relationship. Marley prefers to keep her personal life to herself; Ineke respects Marley's professionalism but thinks she would be better off "living a little more," maybe with her help.[37] As the Milepost Zero branch grows, Marley does open up more, which Ineke appreciates.[38]
Josie Ineke believes that Josie is too much of a dreamer (perhaps similarly to her own sister), but likes that she is eager to prove herself useful and wants to get to know her more.[39] Ineke does wish for Josie to achieve her dreams, and feels it would be "wasted potential" if she gave up for any reason.[40] Ineke also believes that Josie is interested in Marley, but does not intend to gossip about it.[41]
Axel Axel is a child, and Ineke dislikes children. She calls Axel "marginally more likeable" but attributes this to necessity since they are coworkers and have to interact daily.[26] Axel himself doesn't realize this, and he actually thinks he and Ineke are best friends.[42] As Milepost Zero develops, Ineke does start to warm to Axel a little; she still finds him annoying, but appreciates his "gusto." However, their "friendship" is still very one-sided.[43][44]
Theodore Ineke finds Theodore handsome even though he is a ghoul; in her words, this makes him likeable despite his "mediocre" personality. Ever perceptive, Ineke can see Theodore is troubled by his family situation with Marley and hopes he can find peace.[45] As Milepost Zero develops, Ineke comes to admire Theodore more and more.[46] Theodore also enjoys Ineke's company since they are the only "real adults" among Milepost Zero's full-time staff, though it is unclear if he is aware of how she feels.[47]
Fallout 76 upcoming content Windy Windy's cryptid stories are intriguing to Ineke, who suspects she would rather bring monsters to Milepost Zero than keep them away.[48] Ineke does not actually believe most of Windy's stories but does not particularly care if they are true or not.[49] Windy doesn't seem to have any particular opinion of Ineke, but she has made special requests for merchandise from Ineke.[50]

Interactions with the player character[]

Milepost Zero upgrades[]

All upgrades are done through Marley, specifically her dialogue option to give a vendor more supplies.

Tier Cost Benefits
1 150 Supplies
  • Initial hiring; vendor unlocked
2 250 Supplies
  • Vendor inventory includes more unique plans and bulk junk
  • The note Special order is placed on a table in Windy's corner of Milepost Zero

  • Ineke gains dialogue branches to ask more about her family and her time in Europe

Effects of player's actions[]

Some of Ineke's other dialogue also changes based on her own upgrade tier as well as the other Milepost Zero merchants' upgrade tiers. This mainly affects the dialogue options on Ineke's opinions of her coworkers and of Milepost Zero. Once the upgrade tiers of Ineke and at least one other merchant have been maxed out, she will say that she plans to stay. These options are mostly fixed, but one particular response changes depending on how Josie was upgraded.

Trivia
  • Although Ineke doesn't necessarily believe in cryptids, she finds them "beautiful and dangerous." Because of this, she wouldn't mind if they were hunted and killed.[51]
  • Ineke has a phobia of clowns, even as an adult.[52]
Clarifications
  • ^ (Note 1) Since Ineke must have joined the ship before the Great War, this reference puts a rough lower bound on Ineke's age, given by 22 years before the war and 28 years from the war to 2105, when Milepost Zero is set.
  • ^ (Note 2) It is not specified in-game where in Europe Ineke is from. However, Ineke's first name and family name are both of Dutch origin, suggesting that she may hail from Belgium or the Netherlands.

Appearances[]

Ineke appears only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Milepost Zero update.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC After recruiting Ineke, her shop inventory may not immediately appear, and it will seem as though she has nothing for sale at tier 1. This is not intended, and she should have unique plans for sale after being recruited. A definitive fix is not known, but reports have suggested that exhausting her available dialogue, as well as reloading the Milepost Zero interior a few times may help. This bug may also occur with Theodore.[verified]
  • PCPC Although the plan for Ineke's snow globe is supposed to be given by Ineke in her tier 3 dialogue, a bug has been reported in which the plan will not be added to the player's inventory, making the plan and the snow globe inaccessible. This bug has been reported even after patch 1.7.15.12 (update 55) in October 2024.[Meta 1][verified]

Ineke: "I was twenty two and wanted to see the world! Who doesn't at that age? I started off scrubbing decks and moving boxes, but I worked my way up and made the changes I wanted to see. Even if it wasn't always above board. Do not look at me that way. I was the captain by the end! I could've done whatever the hell I liked."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  2. Vault Dweller: "I want to know about your family."
Ineke: "Ah, the De Haans, what a fine group! I miss them dearly."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  3. 3.0 3.1 Vault Dweller: "Do you get on with your folks?"
Ineke: "My father is a great man. He was a baker and oh, the delicacies he would create... I miss them every day! The lemon meringue tarts were heavenly. My mother, however, is a mystery. I never knew her."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 Vault Dweller: "Do you have siblings?"
Ineke: "Just a sister, though we walk very different paths. When I left for the ocean, she was unemployed and chasing her passion for art. I used to write to her when we docked up after a delivery, and she would write back during the layover. But that was a long, long time ago. Before the wasteland. She had her head in the clouds. I miss her fondly."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  5. Vault Dweller: "That bakery sounds impressive..."
Ineke: "t was! It originally belonged to my grandfather, and his father before him. Pretty yellow flowers in the window and the smell of fresh bread... It is one of the things I miss the most about home. Before I went away. Before war."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  6. Vault Dweller: "I feel that Axel would like your father."
Ineke: "Unfortunately, I fear you are correct. My father was always very paternal, even towards annoying children. He was a favorite among my cousins. He would make delicious desserts and we would all share them together, as a family. He is... the best man I know."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  7. Vault Dweller: "What sort of things did you do growing up?"
Ineke: "My sister and I used to chase boats down canals and wander through forests and build camps together in the woods. Those memories... though they are aging, they are precious to me."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  8. Vault Dweller: "What was your favorite thing about it?"
Ineke: "The food, the open fields, bike rides, and the people. It is the homeland of myself, after all. I cannot imagine the war was kind to it."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
Note: In this dialogue, the subject of the question is Europe.
  9. 9.0 9.1 Vault Dweller: "What sort of cargo did you move?"
Ineke: "Everything and anything. I was part of a big company that shipped all across the globe. We would travel to pick up supplies and then travel further to deliver them. Ah, the places I visited. Simply beautiful. But, anyway, we shipped food, furniture, fur, tools, hats and even a telescope! Bunch of junk, but something is always going to be someone's treasure!"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  10. Vault Dweller: "Tell me more about your time before coming here."
Ineke: "So curious, I love that about you! My work before the war was similar to what we are doing now. I was moving cargo on a large ship out on the North Atlantic sea."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  11. Vault Dweller: "You don't sound like you're from around here?"
Ineke: "I have always been a woman of the world. My mother tongue is just one of the many languages I've grown up hearing. I ended up learning most of my English from the people I travelled with for work."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  12. Vault Dweller: "Did you work with a crew?"
Ineke: "Yes, I did. There were a few of us. Myself and twenty others from all around the world, each with our own reasons for being out there. A ship is a good place to run from your old life."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  13. Vault Dweller: "You were the captain?"
Ineke: "You sound surprised. I was good. People listened to me, and I worked hard. I just sought the freedom of the open ocean. To be a leader was never really my intention, but sometimes opportunities arise, and we must grasp the bull by the horns or risk missing out."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  14. 14.0 14.1 Vault Dweller: "What sort of things were you doing?"
Ineke: "We would occasionally do an... extra shipment or two. Narcotics. Addictive substances that partners would pay a lot for. Sometimes weapons too, or even rare animals. I like to think I would not involve myself with that sort of work anymore. Marley would not like it much. But, even if I did, you are not a snitch anyway, are you?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  15. Vault Dweller: "You don't seem fond of your time at sea..."
Ineke: "That ship was the love of my life. But the bombs... well, that isn't something anyone should have to live through. I was out there when they fell, and saw it all from on deck. It was eerily quiet amidst all that disaster. We watched cities burn. Well, I was having a nice day. Thanks for dredging all that up. Just kidding, I don't mind. Not a damn thing we can do about it now, anyway."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  16. Vault Dweller: "How did you end up in America?"
Ineke: "We ran out of resources and had to dock somewhere, didn't we? Ended up in Baltimore. It was close to where we buoyed up, and a few of the crew had family there."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  17. Vault Dweller: "What happened when you came to shore?"
Ineke: "We docked in Baltimore, and held up well enough there for a few months. But, it was a brand new world, and power was in reach for people who had never tasted it before. Eventually supplies started running low, so they took it into their own hands to deal with the problem. Situations like that can turn even the nicest people into the nastiest bastards..."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  18. Vault Dweller: "Do you know what happened to your crew?"
Ineke: "Most stayed on the ship, the ones that could handle that sort of dynamic. Some strong ones, but mostly weaklings. I am not trying to preach about injustice. The wasteland is hard, I get it. But these people took advantage of those who needed far more than they did. Those who couldn't defend themselves. People who were dying, old folk, children, single mothers... people who didn't get a choice. It was a little too much, even for me. But, it was a lifetime ago now. Best not to dwell, or my own sanity may not forgive me."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  19. Vault Dweller: "Can you tell me more about your job as an imported goods merchant?"
Ineke: "I'm glad you asked. I acquire items from around the globe, and sell them on. I can offer common and rich folk a taste of the world... for a few caps, of course."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  20. Vault Dweller: "So you're expecting to just sell the rest of the old junk now?"
Ineke: "You must consider that, in times like these, people long for treasures that make them feel like the world has not changed so much. I say clinging to the past is for fools, but each to their own, hm? Besides, nobody is making you buy them. If you don't like it? Leave it."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  21. Vault Dweller: "Do you sell useful stuff too?"
Ineke: "Yes, of course. I have some clothes, food, and I think I saw some spare scrap, too. That piqued your interest, didn't it?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  22. Vault Dweller: "I always have time for you, Ineke."
Ineke: "Good answer! I like you. Some of my connections got in touch; we went out this morning to collect some new merchandise. You have been a good friend, so I want to give you first choice. Come trade with me anytime, or just stop by for a chat!"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  23. 23.0 23.1 Vault Dweller: "Do you still talk to any of them?"
Ineke: "A few, yes. The good ones. We keep in touch via letters, usually moved by different caravans. They let me know if they stumble on any other abandoned loot, then I can take my cut as a thanks for the years on the ocean. I admire their loyalty."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  24. 24.0 24.1 Vault Dweller: "Planning on sticking around long?"
Ineke: "Eh, we will see! This job is comfortable... But being tied down means being stuck in a routine, and I would rather be shot than live predictably. Let us see where life takes us, hm?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  25. Vault Dweller: "No family around here, then?"
Ineke: "Just me, and I don't plan on changing that anytime soon. Though, perhaps these fine people count as family now!"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  26. 26.0 26.1 Vault Dweller: "What do you think of Axel?"
Ineke: "I do not like children. They are insufferable little creatures. Very loud, and whiney. Axel is... marginally more likeable, but perhaps this is just because I must see his face every day."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  27. Vault Dweller: "You know Marley?"
Ineke: "Well enough. I met her when I arrived in Shenandoah a few weeks back. She offered me work selling my wares in exchange for a quiet life. I wasn't sure I wanted to hang with a new crew just yet... but it was too good to pass up."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  28. Theodore: "Imported goods? Is that what they're calling narcotics these days?"
    (Theodore's dialogue)
  29. Vault Dweller: "Seems everyone in this company has a story. What's yours?"
Ineke: "Aha, no small talk; straight to the chase! Worry not, I wear my heart on my sleeve. But there is plenty of time to trade tales. That glint in your eye tells me you have a few of your own, hm?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  30. Vault Dweller: "What sort of stories are you interested in hearing about?"
Ineke: "Adventures! I want to hear about places traveled, food you have eaten, drinks enjoyed, people, friends, enemies, lovers... I have lived through plenty myself, but I'm ready to kick back for a little while. Still, that itch for life... it never truly disappears, does it?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  31. Vault Dweller: "What sort of prices?"
Ineke: "I could have been tempted to charge you high prices, but you intrigue me! I see some interesting tales behind those eyes. Do not worry, you can expect me to cut you a fair deal. Caps will come and go, but stories will stay long after we are both in the ground."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  32. Ineke: "This is the life. Good beer, good company."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  33. Ineke: "Storm looks terrible today... Ah, it gives me that familiar itch for adventure."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  34. Ineke: "Ah, warm days like these make me long for cider and the open ocean."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  35. Vault Dweller: "Decided to stick around?"
Ineke: "I have grown rather fond of this place, and these people too. So yes, for now they are stuck with me!"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  36. Vault Dweller: "Have you spoken to your family since the war?"
Ineke: "I wrote down everything I wanted to say. It was... cathartic. But there is no way to send it halfway around the world, of course. My father, he will be so old now. But I like to hope my sister has found a safe space to take care of him."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  37. Vault Dweller: "What do you think of Marley?"
Ineke: "She is a smart girl. Knows what she wants and keeps her head down. I respect that. She needs to live a little more, though! The girl is too quiet....seems she could do with an adventure, away from the business. Ineke will sort her out."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  38. Vault Dweller: "Marley seems to be coming out of her shell."
Ineke: "Indeed! A fine leader that girl is proving to be. I wonder what her plans are, beyond this place."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  39. Vault Dweller: "What do you think of Josie?"
Ineke: "Ah yes, Josie. She spends so much time in that head of hers...perhaps too much, hm? But it is endearing to see someone so eager to prove themselves. I hope to know more about her."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  40. Vault Dweller: "Josie doesn't seem to be doing well."
Ineke: "It is a shame to see such wasted potential in that girl. She had big dreams but... it seems her vices got the better of her."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  41. Vault Dweller: "Josie is fitting in well here."
Ineke: "I think it took her a little while to warm to the Brahmin, but she seems to be finding her place here. I see the way she looks at Marley, too. But you know me; I am not one to gossip."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  42. Vault Dweller: "Ineke seems to like you a lot..."
Axel: "Ineke is awesome! We're practically best friends."
    (Axel's dialogue)
  43. Vault Dweller: "Have you warmed to little Axel yet?"
Ineke: "Warmed, no. I am tolerating him, we will say. Is he still irritating? Yes, that fact remains indisputable. But I like him enough. He has... gusto."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  44. Vault Dweller: "Ineke mentioned you earlier..."
Axel: "Wow, really, what did she say?"
Vault Dweller: "I think your friendship is a little... one-sided."
Axel: "Oh...does she think she likes me more than I like her? That's silly. I think she's awesome!"
    (Axel's dialogue)
  45. Vault Dweller: "What do you think of Theodore?"
Ineke: "He is a handsome man. This makes him likeable, even if his personality is mediocre. I do not know his story, but I can see he seeks peace, especially in his kinship with Marley... But yes, that is none of my business. Or yours either, my prying friend."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  46. Vault Dweller: "You and Theodore seem to get on well."
Ineke: "The more I admire him, the more handsome he gets. He still looks lonely, but I believe he is finding a home here. It seems fate has been kind to him in his older age, and I'm not just talking about his looks!"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  47. Vault Dweller: "Ineke is really fond of you."
Theodore: "She's nice enough. Good to bond with a real adult, you know? Stops me going completely insane."
    (Theodore's dialogue)
  48. Vault Dweller: "What do you think of Windy?"
Ineke: "She intrigues me, much like you do! I do suspect she is more interested in seeking monsters, rather than keeping them away. It is no skin off my nose. Just make sure she does not lure any monsters here, hm?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  49. Vault Dweller: "Windy seems... interesting?"
Ineke: "Ah yes, now that's a girl with a story! I cannot say I believe most of them, but eh, who am I to dispute fact from fiction. These monsters she seeks, do they interest you too?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  50. Special order
  51. Vault Dweller: "Those creatures should be left to roam, not hunted."
Ineke: "Yes, but these creatures are beautiful and dangerousl.In-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar I would much rather have one dead on my floor than alive with my head in its mouth, hm?"
    (Ineke's dialogue)
  52. Vault Dweller: "You'd never catch me fighting those beasts."
Ineke: "Ah, you are less brave than you look then! That is fine, we all have our own aversions. It is nothing to be ashamed of! Between you and me, I am deathly afraid of clowns, but tell anyone and I will probably kill you."
    (Ineke's dialogue)
