Detailed walkthrough[]
After reaching Vault 3 in the South Vegas ruins, populated by hostile Fiends, just after entering one will encounter a female Fiend guard who aggressively demands to know why they came to the raiders' stronghold; one can either rebuff her question and attack the Fiends immediately, or pass a 64 Speech skill check, or wear Great Khan armor during the side quest Aba Daba Honeymoon to render the Fiends non-hostile and allow full access to the entire Vault. This quest requires entering the living quarters section, which is reached by turning left after going through the door at the back of the entrance chamber, hugging the left wall until coming to a staircase leading to the section entrance.
Within the living quarters, make a left, then a right to descend down to the bottom floor of the atrium, where one will find a holding cell occupied by three captives, Rick Lancer, Rachael, and Dennis. Speaking to Rick will reveal that the three are caravaneers that the Fiends kidnapped hoping to ransom them for caps, however, he says there is no one left alive who would be willing to pay a ransom for their release, and believes that it is just a matter of time before the Fiends realize this and kill them anyway. After agreeing to help them escape, Rick mentions that a Fiend named Daniel has the key. Rick also mentions that Carter, a fourth member of the group killed in a previous escape attempt, acquired the password to the overseer's computer that could open access to a weapons stash hidden in the Vault's flooded section; one can choose the dialogue option to intimidate him for the password immediately or agree to help them all escape in exchange for it.
To free the captives, one can either try to pick the Hard-locked cell door as well or find the Fiend, Daniel in a room towards the back of the sleeping area and either kill or pickpocket him to get the key to the cell; Daniel will also have a copy of the Vault 3 maintenance key opening access to the section of the Vault occupied by the Fiends' leader, Motor-Runner if one did not pass the dialogue checks earlier. After unlocking the cell doors to let them out, Rick will initiate dialogue and offer the password if it was not already gotten. The three will sneak out of the living quarters and leave the Vault, completing the quest and garnering Karma gain and 100 XP.
Notes[]
- The freed caravaners will not be attacked by nearby Fiends, even if discovered.
- Killing the three caravaneers does not result in any loss of Karma. Even if all of the captives are dead, Karma gain is still earned by unlocking the cell door.
Bugs[]
Sometimes, the prisoners will spawn outside of the cages. They will still have dialogue as if they were imprisoned, and the Fiends will not seem to notice either. [verified]
