I Forgot to Remember to Forget is a side quest in Fallout: New Vegas.
Activating the quest
In order to access the necessary dialogue options, the player must have spoken to Manny Vargas in Novac or Bitter-Root in Camp McCarran about his tour of duty in the NCR and Bitter Springs. In order to trigger the quest, the player must accumulate 5 "history" points with Boone. These can only be earned while Boone is in your party.
- Killing Vulpes Inculta: +1
- Vulpes appears at multiple points, leaving several opportunities to kill him. He first appears in Nipton. If spared, he'll appear on The Strip to give you the Mark of Caesar (If you kill Vulpes when he approaches you at the strip, Securitron guards will not become hostile, nor will anyone else, making this the easiest time to kill him). Finally, he'll appear at the Fort by Caesar's side.
- Camp McCarran
- When interrogating the captured Legion POW Silus at Camp McCarran, if he dies: +1.
- Note that this history point is earned for Silus's death at any point, not just during torture. The ideal way of earning it is by making the Speech checks to have Silus discuss the information leaks, talking to Boyd to get the rewards, then re-entering the interrogation room with a weapon and killing Silus with a sneak attack.
- During the mission 'I Put a Spell on You' at Camp McCarran
- If you confront and kill the spy in act: +1.
- If you disarm the monorail bomb: +1.
- When interrogating the captured Legion POW Silus at Camp McCarran, if he dies: +1.
- The Fort
- Killing Caesar at The Fort: +2.
- Legion Raid Camp
- During the side quest Booted at Legion Raid Camp, rescuing the hostage Powder Gangers: +2
- Nelson
- During the side quest Back in Your Own Backyard in Nelson
- If you kill the hostages: +1.
- If you save them: +2.
- During the side quest Back in Your Own Backyard in Nelson
- Camp Searchlight / Cottonwood Cove
- Eradicate the Legion: +2. This can be done independent of the side quest Eye for an Eye (begun at Camp Searchlight; executed at Cottonwood Cove). Note: Counts after killing Aurelius of Phoenix.
Detailed walkthrough
In order for Boone to initiate dialogue about Bitter Springs, the player must have both gained Boone's loyalty and talked to either Manny Vargas in Novac or Bitter-Root at Camp McCarran (after a speech check of 30) about the Bitter Springs massacre. When this happens, the player can suggest going to Bitter Springs. Boone will initially refuse, but later request that the player travel there.
Once you get to Bitter Springs, he asks you to go to Coyote Tail Ridge, where he was stationed, and tells you exactly what happened during the massacre there. He then asks you if you don't mind staying overnight. If you say yes, the screen will fade out and fade back in, with Boone telling you that a Legion raiding party is on the way. It largely consists of recruits, but they can be tough to defeat, especially if you're trying to avoid casualties. Some tougher units will be mingled with the later waves.
The attacking Legion forces come in three waves. The first two waves come toward Bitter Springs up the sloping hill. The third wave comes through a small gap in the side (where the graveyard is located). Two waves of dogs will be dispatched prior to the second and third waves. The quest is considered complete once all three waves are dead. Boone will talk to you again, and at the end of the conversation his armor is upgraded depending on your last answer. Although both armors are only cosmetically different, this choice actually influences Boone's ending.
- 1st answer yields 1st Recon survival armor, making Boone repentant.
- 2nd answer yields 1st Recon assault armor, making Boone bloodthirsty.

Notes
- The name of this quest is a reference to the song by Johnny Cash of the same name.
- If you want to rescue the captive powder gangers at the Legion raid camp without Boone attacking the Legion troops, you can tell him to wait before reaching the camp, free the powder gangers and you will earn the "history points".
- Some of the history points can be earned without Boone actually being present, so long as you bring him to the location. Nelson, Cottonwood Cove, and the Fort can be entirely cleared of hostiles, but Boone will still initiate dialogue as if he was there to see it.
- This is not always the case and may have been patched. As of May 18, 2011, Boone WILL NOT initiate dialogue when brought to said locations after having been cleared of hostiles (and there are no additional dialogue options when speaking to him), resulting in permanent loss of those history points.
- If you're missing that extra point but don't want to go to the Fort yet, and maybe had let Silus live during the quest Silus Treatment at Camp McCarran, you can bring Boone there and kill Silus, even after having finished the interrogation quest peacefully before (more in talk).
- In order to get the quest to activate, you have to exhaust all of Boone's dialogue options about his wife and Bitter Springs. Multiple history points and their associated dialogue can be earned in succession, but you will still have to run through all of it. Boone will usually initiate conversation after earning a point, but not always.
- If you have enough history points but the extra dialogue does not trigger, clearing Cottonwood Cove should trigger it.
- Clearing Cottonwood Cove and the Fort in succession is enough to activate the quest without any prior history points, assuming you didn't kill Vulpes in Nipton. Otherwise, one more point will be needed.
- If you have done all the above and the dialogue still hasn't triggered, go back to Novac and make sure to talk to Manny Vargas (the other sniper). He should have a "new" dialogue about Bitter Springs. Exhaust those dialogue options with Manny and it should open up new conversations with Boone.
- It is possible for either Lieutenant Markland or Captain Gilles to die during the quest, particularly if you are not quick in intercepting the Legion raiders. This will fail their quests: No, Not Much, Bitter Springs Infirmary Blues and Climb Ev'ry Mountain. The presence of refugees and NCR soldiers also makes friendly fire a problem, especially with explosive weapons. Any killed in error will earn infamy and possible hostility from the attacked party.
- Avoiding infamy with Caesar's Legion is possible while saving all refugees and NCR personnel. You will need a strong, silenced weapon (Ratslayer with armor piercing rounds, for example) and a high sneak skill. Before proceeding to Coyote Tail Ridge, leave ED-E at the entrance to Bitter Springs immediately north of the wooden sign. Spend the night with Boone on the ridge, then run up the canyon leading to Bitter Springs. ED-E will have engaged the Legionnaires, at which point you can stealth kill them from behind. Run up into the camp and go hidden. As long as you hold this position and dispatch of the dogs, everyone should be saved and your reputation will not have changed.
- After completion of the quest, Mr. New Vegas will report the incident on Radio New Vegas. He mentions that two civilians repelled an entire Legion raiding force, and in an interview, a civilian witness said that "God sent us two angels, and at least one of them had a .308 caliber flaming sword of justice with a telescopic sight". He will say this even if Boone doesn't use his rifle during the quest.
- If you kill Boone, Mr. New Vegas will mention that he was attacked by a Legion raiding party.
- After completing the quest, fast travel and speak to Boone. If not, when you attempt to travel into the Strip North Gate, you will be hostile for some unknown reason if Boone is still in your party. A quick fix is to send Boone back to Novac or to the Lucky 38 before you go to the Strip.
- An easy way to do the final part where you have to kill all the Legion raiders is to use mines. There are two entrances to Bitter Springs, you can put "mini-mine fields" at each of them. The main entrance is larger so put your mines near the middle in a row of about 7 or 8. The other pass is much easier as it is small. You can put about 3 or 4 rows of 3 mines each in there for maximum effect. For easiest dispatching of all the raiders is to have a good sniper rifle (Such as the Gobi Campaign Rifle) to pick off survivors of your "mine-fields" and the one group that you can catch running around a large rock. The only flaws in this plan are the Vexilarius that comes with the first group comes later (But you can easily pick him off with a scoped rifle) and when several are blown to bits by your mines one or two raiders will run away in fear (Again, easily picked off).
Bugs

- set "96BCD".nOpenness to 5 and exit outdoors, Boone will then initiate the quest. If you are unable to initiate the quest because you did the majority of the history point items without Boone as a companion, then while indoors type this into the console
- Apparently, if you have killed all the NCR in Bitter Springs, this quest will fail immediately after the fade on top of Coyote Tail Ridge.
- Despite the Legion being stated as Prime Legionaries they wear Recruit Helmets instead of Prime Helmets.
- To be able to continue the quest, open the console and enter the command setstage 001349A7 20 This will skip the part of the quest that's glitched, and allow you to begin the "Go with Boone to Coyote Tail Ridge" section of the quest.
After beginning this quest and traveling to Bitter Springs, Boone will sometimes not initiate the conversation necessary to continue the quest and will have only his default dialogue when spoken to.
- Dialogue with Boone will not start when you reach Coyote Tail ridge making the quest incompletable (this can be fixed by reloading an earlier game)
- Sometimes, if Boone approaches you saying that he's ready to go to Bitter Springs, but you don't immediately accept, he may become stationary and will not move again until you talk to him and tell him that you want to go to Bitter Springs.
- If you have played the entire game with another companion and cannot earn any additional history points, on the player, go to the console and typing setstage 001349A7 10 to start this quest.
- If Boone is still looking for enemies even after you have defeated all of the Legion, Boone might say "Let's get through this first," when he was supposed to say the scripted line.
- setstage 001349A7 40 to skip the stay at Coyote Tail Ridge. The game will crash if you kill Vulpes Inculta before completing Boone's "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" quest in which Vulpes is set to spawn. The game still crashes even with Vulpes alive. Using the console, type
- Both points you get during I Put A Spell On You may not count; whichever you do first (save the monorail or kill the spy) will count as one history point, but upon completing the other task the other history point will not register.
- Great Khans may randomly appear near your character when waiting or sleeping. The wait or sleep period will end prematurely and the screen will zoom in as if initiating dialogue (even if no one is in front of your character), but will quickly zoom back out. If you look around, there will be a Great Khan (with whom you cannot speak) standing near your character doing nothing. This may occur numerous times. After completing this quest, members of the
- The players game will grind to a halt and lock up during the 3rd waves attack. The players variations on approach to engagement, weaponry, tactics, prior saves, rebooting, are all ineffective. If the player disconnects from the network (offline), the scenario will slow but not lock up.
- If you ambush Caesar at The Fort and kill Vulpes Inculta he will disappear after the kill shot preventing the player from looting the body.
