The hunting revolver is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.
Characteristics[]

Hunting revolver expanded
The hunting revolver is a large, double-action revolver chambered for .45-70 Gov't rounds. It does a significant amount of damage and comes with a pre-installed x2.46-magnification scope. Its base damage of 58 is the second-highest of any ballistic one-handed weapon, surpassed only by the Ranger Sequoia. Despite being a one-handed revolver, it is not considered a holdout weapon.
In combat, the weapon has few drawbacks except for low durability compared to other revolvers. In general, .45-70 Gov't rounds are quite scarce with most weapon vendors selling very small quantities of said rounds at very high prices and enemies unlikely to carry hunting revolvers and ammo for looting and repairing until at least level 20; as with most other uncommon and rare ammo types, the Great Khan armorer near Spring Mt. Ranch State Park and Quartermaster Bardon in the Hoover Dam offices are among the few that have .45-70 Gov't ammo in substantial quantities.
Durability[]
The hunting revolver can fire a total of about 545 standard rounds, the equivalent of 109 reloads, from full condition before breaking.
Ammunition type | Durability | |
---|---|---|
Shots | Reloads | |
Standard & HP | 545 | 109 |

Behind the scenes[]
In 2013, Joshua Sawyer stated in a Formspring post that the hunting revolver and Ranger Sequoia are based on the Magnum Research BFR, with a "little bit" of inspiration from the "short-lived" Super Six Classic Bison Bull.[Non-game 1] In 2011, Sawyer also alluded to this by mentioning the hunting revolver as a stand-in for a BFR.[Non-game 2] However, he had also previously stated in a 2010 Formspring post that neither the hunting revolver nor the Ranger Sequoia were based on a "specific real-world revolver," since both are double-action revolvers chambered in .45-70 Government. In this post, Sawyer specifically listed the Magnum Research BFR and Bison Bull, noting they were single-action instead.[Non-game 3]
Bugs[]
If loading a saved game from the main menu in which you have a hunting revolver equipped and drawn, the reload animation takes twice as long as normal. This can be solved by simply switching to another gun and then back again. [verified]

- ↑ Question: "This has been bugging me for awhile, what's the Hunting Revolver based on? The only revolver that comes to my mind is the BFR as it's the only I can think of chambered for 45-70 Government."
Joshua Sawyer: "It's not really based on any real-world weapon since I can't think of any double-action revolvers firing .45-70 Gov't. There may be one, but we didn't base the Hunting Revolver/Ranger Sequoia on a specific real-world revolver. The BFR is single-action and so is the Bison Bull (which is, by total coincidence, made in my hometown)."
