A hollow stump is a world object and container in Fallout 76.

Characteristics

Hollow stumps are world objects that activate for quests, becoming a container. During the Follow the Trail random encounter, depending on where the player character is located, a nearby stump will turn into a container for the expressed purpose of the encounter. Once the encounter is complete, it will revert to its static world object version.

Additionally, the unmarked Pioneer Treasure Hunt involves a hollow stump. This specific hollow stump is located at the end of Shining Creek, above the mouth of the river and to the north. It is flanked by three rocks with Pioneer Scouts insignia, and contains the note Pioneer treasure hunt end, as well as Plan: Totem pole ornament.
