Historical Propriety is a two-star (★★) challenge added with the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Gun Runners' Arsenal.

Challenge requirements[]

Kill Caesar with a Knife or Combat Knife.— Challegen description

The Courier must kill Caesar using a knife or combat knife.

Caesar exclusively resides in his tent at the Fort, only accessible via the docks at Cottonwood Cove. Reaching Caesar immediately will require starting Render Unto Caesar and receiving the Mark of Caesar, otherwise the legionnaires of the Cove and the Fort will be hostile on sight.

Knives are a common sight in most pre-War houses around the towns of the Mojave (such as Doc Mitchell's house in Goodsprings) and can also be bought from traveling merchants. Combat knives are a bit more limited, typically only being carried by NCR troopers, but there is one that can be found in the back room of the Vikki and Vance Casino in Primm (it is marked as owned until after completing the side quest My Kind of Town and the related unmarked quest A Team of Moronic Mercenaries, then waiting 72 in-game hours for the casino to reopen causing the knife to no longer be owned).

Effects[]

Grants 500 XP upon completion.

Notes[]

  • This challenge is not repeatable.
  • Using the unique combat knife Chance's knife will count for the challenge, though it requires getting past at least 1-2 cazadores that typically spawn close to Chance's grave as well as obtaining a shovel in order to access the gravesite containing the weapon.
  • Lonesome Road (add-on) Using a Bowie knife or the unique variant Blood-Nap will not count for the challenge.
  • One can complete this challenge as well as the related challenge Even a God-King Can Bleed by first using a throwing spear to cripple Caesar's head for the latter, then use a knife or combat knife to kill him for the former.
  • Performing a Mister Sandman kill on a sleeping Caesar can sometimes complete the challenge.[verification needed]

Behind the scenes[]

The challenge's premise is a reference to the assassination of Julius Caesar, when the conspiring Roman senate surrounded him and stabbed him to death with daggers. Its name is also a call-back to a conversation with Arcade Gannon if he is brought as an active companion to the Fort, where he remarks on the Courier's "historical propriety" in planning to kill Caesar in his own fortress.[1]

References[]

  1. The Courier: "Once we get close to Caesar, we can strike."
Arcade Gannon: "Et tu, mi amice? I have to commend you on your sense of historical propriety, but have you given more than a passing thought to how we would escape? No disrespect intended, but you aren't the first person to dream up the idea. Just give me a sign when you're about to pull out the dagger so I know when to make a run for the cliffs."
