Maggie,
Well, its been a whole year and you're still alive. I thought we'd lost you in Athens, but you turned up. And you didn't lose the leg, even though we all thought you would. A promise is a promise, I owe you the rest of tale. You wanted the rest of the story of that day, when we found the Professor.
Herman had one of them laser pistols he'd lifted off an officer, a real beauty, and he put it to the old man's head. Told him to hand over his books, his medicines, whatever. The way I heard it, the old man just glared at him, asked him how far he thought he'd get with it before the photonic chamber degraded and when was the last time he checked the alignment on the crystal array?
All these questions. Had he thought about optimizing the wavelength? What about his armor? How was he going to recharge the fusion cell without compromising its capacity? Would he like the answer? How many people did he aim to kill? Was it an angels-dancing-on-the-head-of-a-pin situation? I heard Herman's mouth went slack.
The old man had a proposition: "You can have these books, which you will not understand, or you can lower that weapon, come with me, and become a very important man."
That was what I heard, anyway. And we been following him, The Professor, one way or another, ever since.
-Lucky
