A wealthy brahmin baron, Gunderson began with one ranch, but expanded across the land and bought up other ranches before the New California Republic moved into the area. He currently owns a dozen ranches with brahmin and bighorners, and is one of the most powerful ranchers in California.
Gunderson's aggressive business practices are driving down the price of beef considerably, simultaneously making the meat more affordable and earning the homicidal ire of smaller brahmin ranchers, such as Walter Phebus. He is accused by Walter of having used threats of violence and intimidation to secure his near-monopoly on the brahmin meat market. There are stories that say he hires mercenaries to attack and disrupt the operations of smaller ranches in order to strengthen his own.
