The Heavy incinerator (Broken Steel) is a weapon which is added to Fallout 3 with the Broken Steel add-on. It is equipped by Enclave Hellfire Troopers.

Characteristics

  • The Incinerator is essentially a napalm launcher, as it lobs flammable fuel with a splash damage possibility at the target in an arc. These 'projectiles' incur splash damage, and will most often set the enemy on fire, unless a large 'miss' variance is registered.
  • It's interesting to note that the Incinerator shoots one shot per fuel used, and shoots these much like a fatman, while being auto-fire in V.A.T.S. mode. A notable difference is the likelihood of self-damage with the Fat Man that is not seen with the Incinerator, unless fired at a fast-approaching target.
  • The Heavy Incinerator can be fired extremely long distances with relatively good accuracy; it can even be effectively fired across the Potomac River to hit enemies on the other side.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the Heavy Incinerator IS fully automatic outside of VATS (and still very effective when used in this manner)
  • This weapon is incredibly powerful, able to cripple limbs with ease. With the Pyromaniac Perk, Psycho and Yao Guai Meat, this weapon can easily make short work of almost any enemy, even Albino Radscorpions.

Notes

  • The Heavy Incinerator, like most fire based weapons benefits from the Pyromaniac Perk. This, combined with Psycho, causes the weapon to produce a stupid amount of firepower.
  • In V.A.T.S. you fire 4 shots per selection but your ammo only goes down 1 per selection
  • This weapon is close to silent, and will not alert enemies that are mid to long range from you.
  • The Heavy Incinerator does not show up on your back in third-person view. When you take it out, it will have the animation of equipping a flamer, but it will just appear in your hands when the animation begins to draw your hands back forward. This is probably due to the fact that the fuel tanks are fastened on the sides of the weapon, and not on your back.
  • The appearance of the Heavy Incinerator is closer to that of the original Flamer than the Fallout 3 Flamer is.
  • If an NPC has a Heavy Incinerator equipped but holstered, it creates a slope that allows the PC to run up and over the NPC.
  • NPCs have serious friendly-fire issues when equipped with this weapon, as (unlike with hitscan weapons) they will continue to shoot even if an ally runs through their line of fire. It's not unusual to see Enclave Hellfire Troopers set their allies aflame, and the player's own companions may end up shooting the player or innocent bystanders in the back and set them on fire if given this weapon.
  • Just having the heavy incinerator equipped is enough to ignite gas leaks.
  • If you have the Pyromaniac, Superior Defender and Ghoul Ecology perks, this weapon will have a damage rating of 210 in perfect condition.
  • This weapon has the ability to damage enemies under water when firing from above the water surface.
  • Cross is very effective when given this weapon to use, hitting targets about 90% of the time.

Bugs

  • Sometimes there will be no firing sound for this weapon (360 and PC)
  • Contrary to the above, sometimes it will play the firing sound without actually firing. This usually happens when firing straight after leaving V.A.T.S.
  • The weapon's damage will fluctuate between 200 and 216, with the Pyromaniac perk. (Assuming weapon is in perfect condition, and 100 skill in Big Guns)
  • Sometimes limbs detached from the body by this weapon (Gibs) will continue to burn, even after the body itself has burnt out. Whether this is a bug or intentional programming is unknown - but having burning gibs scattered about really does quench your inner Pyromaniac. (360 and PC)
  • This weapon seems to suffer from the same bug as some other effect weapons: after an enemy is set ablaze, additional hits do not seem to do more damage.
