I've modified the radio tower on the roof of the police station, but I'm afraid it just isn't enough.— Scribe Haylen to the Sole Survivor

Scribe Haylen, registration HN-118FS,[1] is a field scribe of the Brotherhood of Steel, stationed at the Cambridge Police Station in 2287.

Sometime after the Brotherhood-Enclave War, as the Brotherhood began recruiting throughout the Capital Wasteland, Haylen was accepted into the organization with Rhys sponsoring her induction and Danse sponsoring her training.[2][3] Rhys took her under his wing during her training and during this time she began to believe that there was a possible romantic connection between them. However, when she asked him about it, he told her that the Brotherhood was the only thing that he cared about and the two never spoke of it again.[4]

She became a scribe, serving in the Brotherhood's Order of the Quill. By 2287, she, Danse, Rhys, and four other soldiers had been assigned together to form Recon Squad Gladius, tasked with investigating the Commonwealth after the loss of Recon Squad Artemis three years prior.[5]

The mission was difficult from the moment of their arrival; after establishing a stronghold at the Cambridge Police Station, Knights Worwick, Brach, Dawes, and Keane all perished from attacks by raiders, super mutants, and feral ghouls respectively. Worwick's death was especially hard on Haylen; she spent two days treating his wounds before Danse ordered her to put him out of his misery via an overdose of painkillers. Despite their losses, Haylen still carried out her assigned tasks, monitoring energy readings from an unknown source and modifying the police station's radio tower to eventually call in reinforcements.[6] She is first encountered during the quest Fire Support and is responsible for the emergency broadcast the Sole Survivor hears. Later on in the Brotherhood questline, she can also be found at Waypoint Echo along with a couple of Brotherhood troops during the quest Liberty Reprimed, and onboard the Prydwen during the quest Blind Betrayal. Afterward, she will return to the police station and continue tasking the Sole Survivor with recovering pre-war technology.

She has certain doubts about the Brotherhood's ideology and practice. She joined out of idealism, but it was quickly confronted by brutal, pragmatic tactics that define Maxson's doctrine. While Haylen continues to work for the Brotherhood, she's constantly doubting herself over the morality of her chosen path.[7]

  • Semper Invicta: She will welcome the Sole Survivor into the ranks of the Brotherhood.
  • Quartermastery: Travel to a random location and find a piece of technology for Haylen.
  • Blind Betrayal: Haylen is furious when Danse is accused of being a synth. She is angry at Quinlan for acting indifferently toward Danse's life and pleads with the Sole Survivor to speak to Danse and hopefully spare him. She can be questioned for information on Danse's whereabouts, leading the Sole Survivor to Listening Post Bravo.
    • If Danse is killed, Haylen will become very cold towards the Sole Survivor.
    • Regardless of her sympathies, if Danse is hired as a companion after Blind Betrayal, Haylen will be hostile to both Danse and the Sole Survivor.
  • Precipice of War: She, along with Rhys, will need to be killed during the Railroad's assault on Cambridge Police Station so a Vertibird can be captured.
  • Liberty Reprimed: Stationed at Waypoint Echo, Haylen sends the player deeper into the Glowing Sea to find weapons for Liberty Prime.

  • If siding against the Brotherhood of Steel, she can be found among the Brotherhood forces defending the Boston Airport.
  • It is suggested that she may have romantic feelings for Rhys. Passing a Charisma check reveals she once asked him about how he felt, only to learn that Rhys placed his devotion to the Brotherhood above all else.
  • She and Rhys bet 20 caps on whether enrolling the Sole Survivor in the Brotherhood was a good idea.
  • During Precipice of War, the Cambridge Police Station safe key can be looted from her corpse.
  • After completing the main quest with either the Brotherhood or the Minutemen, Haylen will ask the player character if they intend to stay with the Brotherhood or not.

  1. Cambridge Police Station terminal entries; Gladius personnel terminal, Gladius Personnel Status, Scribe Haylen
  2. The Sole Survivor: "Recruit? After all I did to help I was expecting more."
Haylen: "Hey, consider yourself lucky. It took me more than a month of training before they let me run my first mission."
    (Haylen's dialogue)
  3. The Sole Survivor: "Why are you cutting me so much slack?"
Haylen: "I, uh... I joined the Brotherhood not too long ago. I used to be like you... wandering alone. So, I know what it feels like when every single person you bump into sticks a gun in your face. Look, it may not seem like it, but Danse is a good man. He's just all soldier... protocol is his bread and butter. And Rhys... well, let's just say he's as hard-headed as a Mister Gutsy. But you know what? I'd trust both of them with my life, because they're good people and that's hard to come by nowadays."
    (Haylen's dialogue)
  4. The Sole Survivor: "Is there something between the two of you?"
Haylen: "When I first joined up... Rhys is the one who sponsored me. He took me under his wing, showed me the ropes. I thought there was a little more between us, so I asked him if he cared about me that way. He told me the Brotherhood of Steel was all that he cared about, and there was no room for anything else in his life. We never spoke about it again. Look, I... I need to get back to things. If you're worried about Rhys, just keep doing what you're doing. He'll come around soon enough."
    (Haylen's dialogue)
  5. Sole Survivor: "Is your recon team the first to explore the Commonwealth?"
Paladin Danse: "No, far from it. I've been meaning to speak with you about that. The last squad went in three years ago. They never reported back. Officially, they're missing, presumed dead."
    (Paladin Danse's dialogue)
