Anyway, I'm just kicking back and sharing stories while I'm between things. I've been all over. Seen Vaults, prewar ruins, and plenty of monsters.

Hawthorne is a freelance adventurer alleged to be well traveled around the Commonwealth in 2287, presently making a stop at the Dugout Inn in his hometown of Diamond City. He appears in Fallout 4.

Background[]

The only son of the late Julian Hawthorne and an unnamed mother, according to his grandmother and last living relative Eustace, he apparently was given a "lovely" first name,[1] but chose to simply go by his last name for his career.[2]

At some point, Hawthorne became a freelance operator and adventurer,[3] a trait he seems to have inherited from his late mother.[1][4] According to Hawthorne himself, his travels have taken him all across the Commonwealth and involved such things as exploring pre-War ruins, visiting old Vault-Tec Vaults, and facing all sorts of mutant monsters.[5] He also claims to know every settlement that has popped up on both sides of the Charles River.[6] Hawthorne is not adverse to taking on work as a hired gun, nor does he begrudge the idea of following the "noble road" of helping others out for the sake of good (so long as he is getting paid),[7] though in such cases, he typically prefers to resolve conflicts by avoiding unnecessary bloodshed.[8]

Notes[]

  • Although Eustace is stated to be Hawthrone's grandmother and he the son of her late son Julian, the game files list her as his immediate parent.
  • Ambient conversations between the inhabitants of both the Abernathy and Finch farms indicate that Lucy Abernathy has a crush on him.[9][10]

Appearances[]

Hawthorne appears only in Fallout 4.

  7. Hawthorne: "Hey. What's your story? Mercenary? Caravan guard?"
Sole Survivor: "I try to protect people, if that's what you mean."

  9. Lucy Abernathy: "Daddy, when are we going back to Diamond City? I need some things. My hairbrush is falling apart, for one."
Blake Abernathy: "You just want to go make eyes at Hawthorne, you mean."
Lucy Abernathy: "Daddy! I do not!"
Blake Abernathy: "Don't you worry, little darling, we'll be heading there soon. Meanwhile, keep your mind on your work and off the boys."

  10. Abigail Finch: "One of these days, we need to find you a good woman, Daniel."
Daniel Finch: "Even if I had time for something like that, which I don't, who'd be interested? The women of the Commonwealth ain't exactly lining up to be farmer's wives."
Abigail Finch: "Then you need a farm girl. There's plenty out there, you know. That Abernathy girl is nice enough, even if her mother's a witch. And there's that girl at Warwick... What's her name? Joanie?"
Daniel Finch: "Janey. And she's too young for me. And Lucy Abernathy's only got eyes for Hawthorne in Diamond City."
Abigail Finch: "Well don't you worry, son. There's someone out there for you."
Daniel Finch: "You're the one who's worried. I can't think past all the weeds I got to pull."
