The hatchet is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.
Characteristics[]
A one-handed axe-head bladed weapon with a rubber-gripped wooden handle for chopping wood and limbs alike. Unlike the throwing hatchet, it is not balanced for use as a projectile weapon.
Compared to the cleaver, the hatchet deals around twice as much damage per strike at a similar attack speed, thus having a higher damage-per-second (DPS) value. It deals around twice as much critical hit damage, costs the same amount of AP, has slightly more durability, weighs the same, and has a higher caps value. Conversely, the cleaver requires no Melee Weapons skill level to the hatchet's 25, and the same 2 Strength attribute level.
The primary element of the weapon is that it deals bonus damage to a target's limbs, increasing the chance of crippling them. It is considered an improved holdout weapon.
Special attack[]
The hatchet has a special Back Slash attack, which does 70% damage in V.A.T.S. at the cost of 5 less action points (requires a Melee skill of 50).

It is possible to execute Back Slash outside of V.A.T.S. (without the required Melee skill of 50 to perform the move) by initiating a power attack (hold attack button) while moving forward.
Durability[]
The hatchet can successfully strike about 1,495 times from full condition before breaking.
Variants[]
- Throwing hatchet - a projectile variant found throughout the Mojave Wasteland.
- Tomahawk - a functionally similar weapon used by the tribals of Zion.
- Poisoned hatchet - a non-playable weapon sometimes used by White Legs pain-makers.
