Hacking is a gameplay mechanic used to gain access to terminals in Fallout 76. The mechanic is largely reused from Fallout 4, with one major change: Players can no longer be locked out from terminals, they will instead be ejected and have to wait for a few seconds before reattempting the hack.
Characteristics[]
A list of words will be presented, all of the same character lengths, interposed with random characters. One of the words is the correct password, and the goal is to guess it by clicking on it. Terminal hacking ability is determined by the Hacker perk and one's Intelligence, with terminal locks being of the Novice, Advanced, Expert, or Master tiers.
If incorrect, the terminal will display "x/y correct" where x is the number of correct letters, and y is the word length. There will be four attempts to select the correct password, at which point the player character will be locked out for 10 seconds.
For locked terminals, Hacker perk cards allow for access attempts. The ability is increased by one for each unique hacking perk card equipped (Hacker, Expert Hacker, and Master Hacker) or are automatically unlocked when using the Master Infiltrator legendary perk.
To unlock terminals requiring a hacking skill of 3, all three perk cards must be equipped at the same time or having a rank 3 Master Infiltrator legendary perk. Equipping duplicates of a perk card does not increase one's hacking skill. Master Infiltrator renders Hacker (Expert, Master) and Picklock (Expert, Master) redundant and will not stack.
Minigame[]
The terminal is hacked by guessing the correct word on the screen. The terminal interface displays a list of words, all of the same character lengths, interposed with random characters. The length of the words is determined by the difficulty of the lock. One of the words is the correct password, and the player has four chances to guess or will be locked out. Each respective hacker perk reduces lockout time, where rank 3 will prevent this lockout altogether and Bobblehead: Science allows one extra guess for one hour.
Finding complete bracket sets (e.g. "<...>", "[...]") on one row will (at random) either remove incorrect words or reset the number of tries.
