Detailed walkthrough[]
The quest is started by traveling to Jacobstown near Mount Charleston in the northwest of the Mojave Wasteland. One will be met at the gate by the town leader, Marcus and can ask several questions about his town and its history. One must then enter the main lodge (go straight from the fence entrance past the old sign and bighorner pen). If entering for the first time, a nightkin named Keene will be standing to the left of the door and remark with disgust at there being "another human" and "one was enough;" one can talk with him about the state of mutant affairs in Jacobstown and information about life as a nightkin. The one to talk to in the lodge is Doctor Henry in the laboratory to the right of the entrance, where he works alongside his ghoul assistant Calamity, trying to find a cure for the schizophrenia plaguing all nightkin due to their excessive usage of Stealth Boys.
Note: If one came to Jacobstown to bring Doctor Henry to the meeting of the Enclave remnants during For Auld Lang Syne, he will refuse to leave until he has completed his research for the cure, requiring one to offer their help in finishing his work.
Medical miracles[]
On elaborating further on his experiments, Doctor Henry says that he has so far pursued two avenues of making a cure: testing out an experimental, stronger Stealth Boy Mark II prototype to observe the effects on nightkin, and studying specimens from the local population of night stalkers that have somehow managed to develop a stealth-field-like ability akin to using a Stealth Boy; because the former avenue carries the risk of inflicting severe, even irreversible damage on the test subject, Henry wants to look further into the latter, and sends the player character to investigate the creatures' lair in the nearby Charleston Cave. He also suggests bringing along Lily Bowen, a nightkin and town shepherd that has dealt regularly with night stalkers and can provide backup against them; she resides just outside the door to the lodge and from then on becomes available as a companion.
From the exterior of the wooden fence around Jacobstown, circle around to the northwest and scale the snowy cliffs to reach Charleston Cave. Inside, the cave system is fairly linear, with the only enemies being several night stalkers that are (mostly) invisible until they attack. Finishing the objective requires entering a chamber at the back of the cave where a dead nightkin lies next to a chewed Stealth Boy, the cause of the night stalkers' invisibility. One can also acquire the unique super sledge Oh, Baby! in the same chamber next to the body.
With the evidence in hand, return to the lodge back at Jacobstown. When shown the chewed Stealth Boy, Doctor Henry declares the night stalker study a dead-end and will have to resort to using the Mark II prototype as the only remaining line of research viable to produce results, with Lily as his current experimental subject. Speak with Lily to confirm her willingness to take part in the experiment, even at the cost of potentially damaging her mind beyond repair and follow her to the laboratory.
Note: If one talks to Lily while they are away from Jacobstown, she will run back to Jacobstown. If one needs her, they should be mindful of where this conversation takes place.
Note: Make sure that Doctor Henry actually does the experiment; it should not take more than 30 seconds for him to start. In the event nothing happens, pushing him closer to Lily can cause the script to activate, which will continue the quest as normal, with some minor exceptions; If Calamity is not in the room, her voice lines won't play. This can be fixed by leaving the room, and waiting for 15 seconds, which will cause the quest to progress to the next step. Furthermore, due to incorrect package variables if done in this fashion, Doctor Henry will sit down and not move from his chair until he must be spoken to to end the quest.
The fate of Jacobstown[]
With Lily at his disposal, Doctor Henry has her activate the Mark II prototype and observe the symptoms she exhibits while under its influence, until he eventually gathers enough useful data. However, soon after concluding the experiment, Keene and a group of nightkin burst into the laboratory, demanding they be given the Mark II prototype, or else they will take it by force. Asking Keene about his reasons reveals that he intends to take his nightkin from Jacobstown and use the Mark II prototype's specifications to upgrade more Stealth Boys for them to use as they see fit, ignoring the likelihood they will go even crazier, attack the human populace in their madness, and stoke more anti-mutant hatred against places like Jacobstown.
The choices made here will affect the ending for Jacobstown as a whole.
Resolving the dilemma with Keene can be accomplished via one of the following:
- Pass an 80 Speech skill check to convince Keene to relent and keep the nightkin at Jacobstown for the time being.
- Comply with Keene's request and give him the Mark II specs, which will cause him to leave peacefully.
- Refuse to give Keene the Mark II specs, and he and the two other nightkin will attack and must be killed.
- One can easily draw the three of them outside and let the super mutants help with the fight.
- One can also go in the corner (where the wheeled tables are) to prevent the nightkin from attacking (or delaying them).
- It is possible to use a Stealth Boy and reverse pickpocket a C4 plastic explosive onto Keene and his 2 nightkin before speaking with him. This way, if one chooses to fight them, a detonator can be used to kill all 3 at once.
- Lily will leave the lodge as Keene is coming into the room, and will not help with the fight.
Once the situation with Keene has been resolved, one must speak with Doctor Henry again. He explains that the data he recorded from Lily's earlier test has proven promising, but to fully complete the cure, he will need her to continue using the Mark II prototype, similarly risking damage to her already-addled mind to a point beyond healing. One has three options for making a decision:
- Tell Doctor Henry to resume his experiments and have Lily continue to wear the Mark II prototype.
- Pass a 90 Science skill check to propose a more efficient testing method that won't risk Lily's health.
- Tell Doctor Henry to stop his experiments with the Mark II prototype and preserve Lily's health.
The quest will complete upon making a decision regarding the nightkin cure, earning 500 XP (590 if the Science check was passed).
Quest stages[]
Notes[]
- Regardless of the quest outcome, it is impossible to acquire the Stealth Boy Mark II prototype.
- Having the Animal Friend perk makes the first half of this quest significantly easier, as the night stalkers in the cave will leave the player character alone while searching for the chewed Stealth Boy.
Behind the scenes[]
- The quest name is a reference to the soft jazz song "Guess Who I Saw Today," written by Murray Grand and Elisse Boyd in 1952.
- This quest was designed by Jeff Husges, who was also the area designer on Jacobstown.[Non-game 1]
Bugs[]
- Immediately after using the speech option with Keene telling Doctor Henry to do as he says, there will be a black screen crash.[verified]
- Sometimes, if you beat Lily to the lodge trying to exit the building again will cause a black screen crash. There is no fix for this at this time aside from exiting the game, erasing all add-on content (including patches) and loading the game with out the add-ons.[verified]
- If you come back to the lodge while the quest "Eureka!" is active, Doctor Henry may not respond to you talking to him, resulting in it being impossible to finish the quest.[verified]
- If you go into V.A.T.S. on Lily while she is testing the Stealth Boy MK II and she is invisible she will turn visible. However, this will not affect the quest.[verified]
- If you ask Lily to help Doctor Henry while she is waiting in the Presidential Suite of the Lucky 38 without asking her to come with you, she will immediately leave to go speak to Doctor Henry. When you return to Jacobstown Lily will not be present anywhere, but you can stil talk to Doctor Henry to initiate the quest. He will go through the dialogue one sentence at a time, and the only solution to get the quest finished is to leave the building and return to Doctor Henry after each line. Please note that this solution does not work on Xbox 360 and PC. This may be fixed on the PC by using console commands.[verified]
- If you have already stealth killed the two other Nightkin that follow Keene (even if nobody saw you do it) Doctor Henry and Calamity will suddenly become hostile upon Keene entering the room without his buddies, instantly failing the quest (being out of sight and/or Hidden will not prevent the Doctor and Calamity from becoming hostile).[verified]
