Bounty Hunting: Grunt Hunt is a repeatable side quest in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update. Unlike the public event Head Hunts, Grunt Hunts are bounties meant for one person to seek out, targeting an easier-to-kill outlaw.

Walkthrough[]

After talking with the Ghoul about how to start bounty hunting, Grunt Hunts can be repeatedly acquired from the pile of wanted posters next to the Ghoul on a table at the Last Resort bar in Highway Town. The Grunt Hunts are focused on lower-level targets, as compared to the public event Head Hunts, which feature tougher targets and named enemies. Once a bounty has been taken from the pile, go to the location marked on the map. As of the Burning Springs update, all of the potential locations are within the Burning Springs region. At the location, an outlaw can be found possessing one of the enemy mutations from Daily Ops, randomly selected and applied to the outlaw. The outlaw is always hostile and must be killed within a 10-minute time limit. Depending on the location, they may be surrounded by other enemies who will assist in the fight, such as Rust raiders. The quest completes once the outlaw is defeated. Afterwards, a new bounty can be taken from the Last Resort to repeat the quest again when the player wishes. The player may potentially receive a wanted poster from completing a Grunt Hunt, allowing them to start a Head Hunt event at no cost.

Possible mutations[]

  • Frosty Outlaw (Freezing Touch): Attacks will freeze players, slowing them down considerably if damaged in succession.
  • Healing Outlaw (Group Regeneration): Heals nearby enemies and themselves.
  • Resilient Outlaw (Resilient): Can only be killed by a melee attack.
  • Stealthy Outlaw (Active Camouflage): Cloaked when not attacking.
  • Swift-Footed Outlaw (Swift-Footed): Possesses increased movement speed.
  • Toxic Outlaw (Toxic Blood): Creates toxic hazards upon death.
  • Volatile Outlaw (Volatile): Explodes on death, dealing damage.

Notes[]

Although the outlaws (as well as the named targets in Head Hunts) may be supported by Rust raiders, it is not confirmed if all of the bounty hunting targets are meant to specifically be members of the Rust King's Army, as this is never explicitly stated by the quest or in dialogue with the Ghoul. Additionally, the Ghoul even says that the Rust King "doesn't interfere" with his bounty-hunting business, and thus he has no reason to interfere with the Rust King's business.[1] The targets have their own internal faction in the game's files, separate from the Rust King's Army, and do not share their dialogue, instead using generic combat grunts, many of which are actually shared with voice types from Wastelanders.
