The grenade launcher is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.
Characteristics[]
A pump-action explosive weapon firing 40mm grenades from a tubular magazine. Compared to the grenade rifle, another weapon that also fires 40mm ammo, the launcher deals more direct damage per shot in addition to the same explosive damage. It also has less spread as well as a quadrupled magazine capacity of 4 to the rifle's 1 and a shorter reload time. However, the rifle has a higher damage-per-second (DPS) value, can inflict critical hit damage, and weighs half as much. The launcher also has a lower velocity than the rifle, i.e. one will need to be closer to the target to have a non-zero accuracy chance in V.A.T.S., in addition to its larger explosion radius which can potentially affect the wielder if they are too close to the target.
Durability[]
The grenade launcher can fire a total of about 495 standard rounds, the equivalent of 124 reloads, from full condition before breaking.
Locations[]
- Can be found at Nellis Air Force Base and on most Boomers, including Pearl.
- The munitions trader at Nellis hangars sells them.
- Two can be found in the armory of Vault 34 in poor condition, along with some 40mm grenade ammunition.
- Grenade launchers can also be purchased from Daniel Contreras at the Camp McCarran supply shack and/or Blake at the Crimson Caravan Company.
- One can be bought from the NCR arms merchant at the 188 Trading Post.
- White Legs tribals at moderate to high levels. They can be found on some of the
- caravan guards at the beginning of the trip to Zion Canyon. There is one carried by one of the
- X-2 transmitter antenna array and Higgs Village. A good condition grenade launcher can be found at the top of a large, tall rock between the
Notes[]
- Because it does not appear in any overworld spawn tables, the grenade launcher cannot be found in any enemy's inventory; it can only be stolen or looted from non-hostile NPCs or purchased from a vendor.
- Taking the Splash Damage perk increases the difficulty in using this weapon without injuring the user.
- While the grenade launcher's max RoF is 1.67 shots per second, with 7 Agility (5 if Rapid Reload is taken), the grenade rifle is capable of reloading faster than this, effectively making the grenade launcher useless for Explosives-focused characters aside from its higher projectile damage.
- holorifle utilizes the stock and pump-action of the grenade launcher in its design, with additional modifications to weaponize hologram technology. The
Behind the scenes[]
- The grenade launcher is based on the China Lake grenade launcher prototype from the late 1960s.[Non-game 1] The receiver and stock are misaligned in-game, likely to fit weapon animations.
- Dead Money changes the repair list from "RepairNVGrenadeLauncher" to "RepairMinigun," which despite its Editor ID, still features only the grenade launcher in the list. The Editor ID of the repair list for the minigun is "RepairMinigunForRealzImSeriousGuys" even in the base game.
Bugs[]
- Dead Money overrides some of the changes that have been made to the grenade launcher in previous patches. With Dead Money installed and nothing else taking up space in your load order, the grenade's base damage is increased to 30, its spread is increased to 1.0, its attack shots/sec is increased to 0.5556, and the flag that makes non-player characters use ammo is lost. [verified]
- In V.A.T.S., you may fire 2 or more shots at an enemy, if the first one succeeds to kill the enemy, the other shots will still be fired, rather than exiting V.A.T.S. when the kill is completed, wasting ammunition and time. [verified]
